Dear seniors,

Hope all is well with everyone. I am a mid-level content industry professional with 11 years of experience in the content industry. I am planning to make an entry into the HR industry. I have already completed an MBA-Marketing full time from Andhra University in 2002. As part of my career change plan, I am planning to pursue a Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management in distance learning mode. I am confused as to which institute should I choose.

I am only planning to join an institute where assignments can be completed online and there is no project or dissertation at the end of the course. I won't have much time to spend on academics owing to my busy schedules. I have done a lot of research but somehow think that guidance from experts here would the best to solve this.

I found this school - MIT School of Distance Education - meets my requirements....it offers PGDHRM course online and there are no projects and assignments...Please let me know if this is a good school. I see that it is recognized by DEC [govt of India] as is SCDL and others....the course costs higher than SCDL...when I spoke to the institute's admission counselor she said the institute uses blackboard system - some innovative online learning system which only IIM-Ahmedabad uses.

Dear Rishi,

Everyone needs a Change, i agree for that. But why at this age, or after having so much of Experience i.e 11 years. If your trying to experiment something and by fortune if your expecting it, believe me this doesn't happen. Or just go through one of my article which was articulated....

CHANGE YOUR LUCK WITH SELF MOTIVATION

More often than not, those people who meet with good fortune, and who are considered to be lucky, are the ones who have decided to enable self help motivation and take control of themselves and make what ever changes are needed in their lives. They are prepared to fail in order to learn and move forward. They understand that success happens when preparation meets opportunity.

****Self Fulfilling Prophecy***

The law of cause and effect demonstrates that events don’t happen by chance. You are not where you are today by chance. Where you are at this moment is a product of your thoughts and actions of your past, therefor your future will be created in the present not by wish-full thinking about the future. It’s what you do today that creates your future, so knowing this you can decide what it is that you want in the future and start creating it today. (Same is in my linkedin profile)

If your one of those who pertain to the above category, then your most welcome for a change.

I would like to give kudos to you for your extreme confidence and optimism i saw in your reply and since you know what your doing, My best wishes for your next career, what ever you take it up.

Please do not hesitate to reach us/me for any info/ queries. Also my other colleagues might have their own views, lets see the open field now.

You have 11 years of experience as a content writer; have done your MBA - Marketing & are now planning to do PGDM - HR, and you are keen to work in the HR domain. Are you by any chance trying to convey that HR is so open a field that any person, with any background, can step in & start a career in HR any time in one's life?
I am sure your experience & qualifications have duly sharpened your faculty of discrimination and you are capable to identify your own strengths & weaknesses. Your strengths, in my opinion, should decide your career path. With MBA - Mktg as a qualification, you should be in a position to market your own strengths and apply for some HR positions which have been advertised in different job portals & evaluate yourself on the basis of responses received. You could even post your own resume on a job portal & await responses from the employers.

Dear Sir [Bhatia ji],
Thank you very much for your reply. If I am right I see a subtle hint of sarcasm in it. There is an advice in it too. Yes, you are right that HR is not such an easy field to break into. However, I was unlucky enough for not being able to pursue the specialization in my full time MBA - my college did not have it...I

Rishi,
I think it's too late for a career change.
If you do your pgdba now, you will be considered a fresher in hr. your existing 11 years of experience is no use. Are you willing to start your career again with fresher salary ? Say 15k per month ? Competing with 22-25 year olds for the job ?
Will companies even consider you for hr jobs ? I have my doubt.
At best you may be able to move to hr department within your existing company where your expertise and experience as content writer will help you understand the mindset ad problems of the employees. Think of all the above before you try for a change

Hi Saswatabanerjee,

Thank you for reply/advice. You may be right but I have this desire which is left unsatisfied. One of the friends who has 9 years of experience in the HR industry and is now working as an Regional Manager - Talent acquisition with one of the biggest MNC brands in the foodservice industry advised me to move into learning and development which he says is the Logical move....also, L&D is a branchout of HR....Though I have a strong desire for HR many around are warning that I have to start from the scratch in HR...I have exposure in T&D...for over 6 years....In fact, I am currently working as Associate Manager - Content [International HR Learning project] and am a part of the HR team of one of the top global IT giants.

L&D is also one of my interests but not so much as HR...Could you please advise me about the L&D career paths in India and if there is any additional course I need to do to enter this industry? I completed MBA-Marketing full time from Andhra University in 2002...I don't have any additional qualifications...If this is the only option to continue my career in the RIGHT path....I am game to do it...

Awaiting your reply/Advice....

Sorry, I do not know enough on the L&D segment to comment or advise
It seems your best option is to take help of your friend since he seem to know what he is talking about. Further, he will be able to help you get the job you want. But be prepared for an earning hit initially.

Dear Rishi ji,
I do not agree that it's too late for career change as stated by Saswata ji. Saswata ji, sorry to differ with you.
According to me, if you have 2D with you- i.e. Desire & Dedication, you can achieve what you want. Both the D are very much present in you. I am sure, you will definitely achieve what you want to.
I have seen many successful executives in cross functioning after 55 years of age.
So, all the best to you, Rishi ji.
Some useful tips are therein in below given link for you.

Dear Keshavji,
Thank you very much for your encouragement...It gives me a ray of hope...But I request you or any senior member here to practically advise on how to go about this transition....I don't have enough time to delay....Symbiosis Center for Distance Learning will close its admissions for PGDiploma HRM by June 2013....if most of the seniors suggest otherwise.....I will end up doing a Certificate of HRM from SCDL, a single course certification. I am sure to get equipped with at least a certification of HRM if not an MBA-HR or PGDHRM...[I already have an MBA-Marketing, hence I have chosen PGDHRM]....
Awaiting a mentor's advice....
Best Regards,
Rishi....
