My friend has got an offer for retainership as editor starting next week. Since it is the first time for him, there are some doubts:
1. How does it actually work? Shld he wait the whole day in front of the comp or mobile for any mail/msg reg work from the company? Or he can just be doing anything but when he gets work he needs to complete it within deadline?
2. Are retainer editors considered lower than fulltime employees? Does it show in their treatment?
3. Any future for retainers after the term in the industry? The company, of course, if they are happy may extend.

Dear Aishwarya,

Your friend have been offered a Retainership contract, as the services are deemed to last for a duration. However, if the firm have a policy to convert the consultant on Retainership agreement, it works for their benefit.

Here's some technical details about how Retainership work in India and its legal implications.

Retainership: Income Tax

Retainership-Dual Employment

Benefits of converting a Retainer

There can be an operational difference in how firms implement them. Hence, the areas including work flow, its volume and the deadlines are entirely the Reporting Manager's prerogative. Unless he had signed on a Service Level Agreement, with set of deliverables and its Turn-Around-Time, he has no reasons to worry.

The experience under Retainership would be valued as this is a very common practice for employment. Its not just limited to one vertical, i.e., print business, there is a post on a Doctor being hired as a Retainer. As long as your friend is creating value with his tasks and adding on to his professional acumen, he is building on his credibility.

Hope that answer your questions.

Since your friend has been offered for a retainer as editor, he will be assigned a job from the senior editor and he has to report to the senior editor/chief editor.
Retainers does not have the same privilege that of an employee, but they are not considered lower or upper than employee which is equivalent to discrimination.
Last but not the least retainers can be converted to employee or the retainership can be extended as the case may, but purely depends from company to company as per their policy/rules/regulations
