Dear All,

Greetings!

I am again here…. with one more query. One of our colleague who is appearing for various govt. exams . She is 32 years old and could appear for such examinations , for one more year only. She is a widow. For security as well as for surviving she need to work. She is not so good in her career till now. She is Working in pvt. organizations for earning bread & butter.

She asked me suggestion weather she should resign from current job & prepare for one year. Or she should continue work n study side by side. From last two years she is not able to get things done by doing job and study at the same time. Her one more concern is at this place(this job) she reached after very difficulties. Since she don’t have much references and professional smartness she is feared , that if she resigns from this job what if she failed in getting govt job ….

I am not able to suggest her exact way. We have discussed it with one of my senior but he said directly to resign & once she resign she wont get job in the same organization again. Also his behavior towards her is changed quite. This senior has a very good relation with our HOD & MD.

Shall I ask her to discuss this with ED? Like if she tell the truth to ED-Executive Director telling that what is her need. If she didn’t get govt job she would like to work in our organization. I know it is not at all professional. But ….

Please suggest how should I help her now.

Thanks & Regards

Dear Mnl,

You could have written the post little professionally.

What is the designation of this lady? What is her qualification? How many years of experience she has? What is the nature of the industry in which she works? What are the career opportunities in the field? Which skills she needs to master in order to grow further?

For a dedicated worker, there are abundant opportunities to grow in the private sector. For a widow to take a career break and prepare for the competitive exams is quite risky. What if she does not get through? Secondly, her age is not on her side. Thirdly, she has lot of responsibilities too. Therefore, she needs to take this call judiciously.

Yes, there is lot to get lured towards government jobs. These are secure and stress free. There are no long working hours. But then this career choice has to be made by 25. I could not understand for which government job the age limit is well above 32!

India has critical shortage of the trained and skilled manpower. Nevertheless, working in private sector needs hard work and constant learning. If she is prepared for that then she can continue and switch the job for higher level. Above all why that lady did not write this post? To solve one's problem or to find career opportunities one has to take the initiative. Career matters cannot piggybacked (Untavarun shelya hakne, in Marathi). You could have told her firmly!

All the best to her!

Mnl: From a professional standpoint, easier for her to stick to her current job (bread, butter, etc) than attempt a new role at this point in time.

Dear Mnl,
If she has not mentioned that she is widow then how come you entered this information in your post? This is a clear case of misrepresentation of facts. How can you do that? Don't you think that you are accountable to the information on one's marital status? I strongly condemn this!
Hope you learn lesson from your post.

Dear mnl and friends
i fully appreciate your friend's concern before taking a new step.
pl advice her
1. not to worry about the next job. there is an old statistical data that no one stays without a job for more than 18 months.
2. if she wants to take the upsc or state service exams ask her to do it wholeheartedly.
3. can she support herself for the duration of preparation or can her family support her.
4. does she have children to be supported by her. if so what will be her plans
5. IF SHE CAN SURVIVE ON HER SAVINGS TELL HER TO TAKE THE LEAP NOT WORRYING ABOUT WHETHER SHE WILL GET THE GOVERNMENT JOB OR NOT.
i am sure the forum has many samritans who will render help . i will be the first volunteer.

MNL, I can quite understand her apprehension. I would suggest her to stick to the current option. But choose her knowledge and skill set update wisely so that even if she does not get a government job, she can climb higher rungs in the same or similar companies.

Dear All my seniors & mnl,
The case can be seen in different way.If she could survive by her savings (as said by my seniors), then she can take a call to proceed ignoring the current job and if not and not supported by any of her family members and having liabilites waiting at gate, she should stick to this job and to learn thing in a professional way to upgrade her instead of fearing for future (whether could i suceed in securing govt job or not like) tell her to be confident and self reliable on her actions she wish to proceed.(suno subki karo manki-Hindi) rest, my blessings are with her to exel in her action.
