Dear All,
I've got a job offer from a company but they want to keep my original documents (marksheet & degree certificates) till the time I'd be working there. Now I am being quite apprehensive towards this. I asked the reason behind this and they said its company's policy and my documents will be returned the day I'll leave frrom there. Please guide me shall I join there and is it okay if I submit my original certificates?

Hi Fnd It’ll not better for you and yours future. According to me it is not correct. Some time without any information they can take lone upon your documents and you could not do against this.

Starshine,

Recently i came across my friend in a similar dilemma, and we choose not to join the company, which asked for his original certificates.

A company may insist to retain the original documents of the newly joined employee for certain reasons

1) The profile given to the employee might be sensitive where, they are handling any confidential information or is subject to financial risk / loss. They don't want the employee to make a sudden exit even without informing the employer, causing huge losses.

2) The company doesn't believe that they have minimum capability to retain the employee with its work atmosphere, culture and internal systems & policies.

It may be either of the above reasons or a combination of both. When u submit your documents with the company , they have the upper hand . They may start dictating terms on you or may even force you to work on hectic schedules. They might also force you to extend notice periods and in the end you will be locked with this employer.

I would suggest, never ever submit your documents in return for an employment. It clearly sends out bad msg about the company.

I am unaware of the level in which you have applied and range of your compensation , so my views will be generic in approach.

Regards
Sriram

Hi..Starshine..
Dear I agree with neepunjika and please know about the company and its policies, But there wont be such policies to keep the employee certificates. It is just to keep the employee with them for the long term. Please don't give your certificates n moreover it would be problem for you if you get any good opportunity in future.
You can give the certificates when it is a mnc and if they pay you with good sal n perks. If so there wont be much problem with it.

Dear Member,
As far i m concerned company cant keep your original certificates or marksheet. you make attested or notory copies of your certificate and give them. Attestion of any certiifcate is as good as original. But i think you shld not give them your original certificates.

Hi,
Please don't take such opportunity. I have faced same kind of issue in my life. It was very hard to get back those documents.

Hi,
I feel that this a clear case of despration by the company to compel people to work and not leave company. Its better to be unemployed for few more weeks rather then be blackmailed to keep woking.
No organization can make any rules which are even against the law of the land. Company can ask you to show the proff and can even ask to to provide attested copies of the same to them.
If security is a concern they can have your sign a "Non disclosuer agreement" or even a "non competetion working " agreement for a time period.
please do not play with your own future.

Yes, This is almost common factor in some industries in Bangladesh also, but it depends on the organization & the type or nature of its business, employee benefits, so many things related to make your final decisions.
If employee benefits are more than enough & satisfy you, then I think you should join there.
Thanks
