This is a direct message to fellow employees and HR managers.

Please don't offer less CTC to some one who deserves better package, even if his/her's previous CTC is too low.

A lot of research and analysis has gone through to make the above statement.

Reasons? huh! I would like to put them as consequences/causes for downfall of India.

There are two sides of coin to look at. One from the country progress's point of view and the other from employee's point of view.

1) For many years India is considered to be the hub for "cheap labor". But I need my fellow HR's to realize and not fall into that crap, get the facts straight. India should NOT be considered as a i) cheap labor country rather ii) it should be considered as the only country which can possibly supply talented professionals throughout the world!

Why India is considered to be a cheap labor country?
Because - Indian economy had been set to be low. Now we all know what politics took place when it all started. Yes, Bretton Woods conference.

Why most of our fresh graduates and post graduates lack salary negotiation skills?
Because - Our education system is commercialized. More students, more money. Colleges need reputation to lure more students to join them. Reputation comes from placement record. Now these bl**dy placement co-ordinators teach students with all crap. ex: say yes for all following questions:
a) you are ready to work like a donkey? - Yes
b) you are willing to sign a bond? - Yes
c) You would be ok with industrial standard salary? (where each company has its own too low bar for industrial standard) - Yes
d) Will you be ok working with nigh shifts? (Why can't those counterparts sacrifice 4 night hours?, don't know. Innocent employee looses his/her health to slogs in night shifts) - Yes

Now where do you see a salary negotiation skill developing in this kind of environment?

My opinion - even if you are a fresher, you should be in a position to ask your potential employer if they can provide you with a challenging environment? or they can challenge your potential to push you to the limit? (Don't get me wrong, they are gonna make you work like a donkey, still can they let you handle tasks where in you can apply your thought?)

Now from the point of view of employee.

Background: He/she spends lacks of bucks into commercialized educational systemic colleges, some risk with hefty loans in hope of getting a better life.
Situation: He/she lacks negotiation skills. It affects his/her life drastically. Neither can he/she give results. Neither can he/she apply thought and progress in career.
Ideal situation: An employee showing his/her character, boldness, sheer talent and applying valuable thoughts to their processes will allow progress his/her individual progress in the organization and career as well.
Never shy away from imposing your idea of ideal CTC for the very reason I have stated above.
For those who work in overseas headquartered organizations : They should feel that there is a potential opportunity to invest in India rather than making us do those background works alone. This makes them offer more packages than one can expect. (Frankly speaking with our people around, all of those background tasks can be automated).

Comments are most welcome. Ready to face grilling from HR managers if any.

Dear Vidalvidi,

You have given your long post but these appear to be your perceptions. The cause of these perceptions appear to be your frustration.

When the Indian economy opened up in 1991, large masses, particular higher and lower middle class benefited. Few were direct and beneficiaries when they got job into IT/ITES sector. Youths working in these sectors had lot of disposable income and they started pumping money into the other sectors. Few were indirect beneficiaries because they could get jobs in the other sectors.



What is your academic qualification and what per cent of marks did you score? You have targeted HR and you have called them names. Is this because of your inability to get decent job? What is the reason to wear heart on your sleeves?

Rather than ranting against HR, please tell us what exactly your problem is. Seniors will offer the solution. Thousands have benefited by the advices given in this forum and so you could be one amongst them. Cool down. Roiling against HR will not take you anywhere.

PS I dont hold any special brief for HR, but

There is some justice in what the poster says,but the target agency is not the one responsible for poor wages.

It is a very materialistic view that CTC alone decides the job.

Job content,challenges,growth, educative value are things which should be ideally more important than CTC.

Otherwise i would be a labourer in FCI and earn Rs400000 per month on overtime

At FCI, some loaders earn more than Rs 4 lakh/month - The Times of India

POV of poster and my thoughts:

India is grossly overpopulated and when population is high labour comes cheap.

2)Why India is considered to be a cheap labor country?

India has a surfeit of degree colleges,technical institute,but product is not upto market expectations.Many fresh graduates

need training to even complete basic requirements of the organisation.

India Graduates Millions, but Too Few Are Fit to Hire - WSJ

Many PGs or graduates lack basic skills and have to trained specially.

Basic reading and comprehension skills of graduates are poor.

That out of 3,00,000 management graduates qualifying every year hardly 35,000 of them are employable.

With this being the ground reality, one cannot expect too high a CTC straightaway.

Well if one is not skilled enough,then one will be stuck.but those skilled get higher wages

See this:That IT-major HCL Tech has rewarded 130 topperforming employees with mercs or allexpenses-paid holidays abroad as a token of appreciation for their contribution to the company.

That the Infosys, the country's second-largest IT major has gifted 30,000 of its top employees with iPhone 6s, besides announcing 100% variable bonus payouts for the October-December quarter.

So knowledge,performance is the one the that counts.

My personal view:

Please qualify yourslef,acquire marketable skills and then establish your worth in the field,automatically you will be in demand.

Dear Dinesh,
Thanks for constructive, polite and precise reply. Wish I had one reporting manager like you. Apologise for the subject line.
To qualify myself. I am MBA (International Business) graduate with 65% grades. I currently hold a job, not decent enough as you rightly quoted. I have been working as an analyst (market research) for almost 2 years now, still I don't find myself in a stable position which could promise future. I see that my skill set i) Knowledge abou International business ii) Communication & presentation skills don't add value to my work. Rather, only my reading skills (google search) is being useful at my work.
I would like to ask seniors a quetion. What other skills could I add to my profile so I could find a relevant or a decent job where I could use my degree and skills?

Dear Vidalvidi,
I strongly oppose the subject line.
Secondly CTC offered is purely based on the Organization standard and the candidate profile.
HR has to follow those and cannot give from his pocket.
As Dinesh rightly said that you are one of those having that kind of perception and need not be everyone's.
As you said..There are two sides of coin to look at....So it need to be started with you.

Dear Vidalvidi,

The cause of your frustration is your inability to get job that matches your qualification. But then this happens with large number of persons. I have seen few MBA (HR) in the shoes of Purchase Managers. Just recently I met MD of one company that produces electric control panels. I thought that he must have been BE (Elect). But no, he turned out to be BE (Chemical).

Except core subjects, general subjects are sufficient to add value to your current job. Do you have scope to become manager in the existing line? Try becoming manager. Secondly, even now also you can switch your job to international business. Another option is to get into Supply Chain Management (SCM). Third option is get into international marketing.

I recommend you drawing out various options and starting looking for the job search. Possibly you may be considered as fresher. But be as it may. You will be able to do something that borders on International Business.

As far as HR is concerned, you might have few bad experiences but painting all HR with same brush will not be fair. Secondly, HR just implements the instructions of top management. They are just the representatives of their authority. The real malaise is that fewer jobs that demands your skill set. But then at this stage instead of getting galled at HR, make career plan. You will succeed surely.
