Basic salary means the total emolument agreed to be paid for the services of an employee. Anything over and above which are paid to compensate certain costs on account of the employee's stay in the locality for the purpose of employment are allowances. House rent allowance and travelling allowance are allowances which are compensatory in nature. There are certain amounts which will accrue on certain conditions, like incentives, overtime allowance, and these are also out of the scope of basic wages. In short there is no percentage as such for basic wages on gross salary.
