We have introduce a system to submit new ideas and suggestion forms to company where we have to give new ideas which can reduce the cost and new suggestions for existing system improvement. At the starting we feel that it is innovative and actually it is good but now days we are very frustrated to submit. Boss told to give it compulsory before 3rd of every month other wise salary will not get credited & Yearly bonus will not get credited. Compulsory 8 ideas and 8 suggestions in year required.
It is not big deal to submit the same but if in case any one doesn't have idea & suggestion what he /she will do? Many a times employees also go against rules, after having the same they are not submitting.
Many a times after submitting MD is not taking any action. He is giving reason all the time i.e. funds problem, we will think and afterwords no initiatives after reminders.
CAN ANYBODY SUGGEST HOW DO I DEAL WITH IT.

to understand your problem, let me put as "creativity at its peril". what type of management is your that I don`t know. But the way your MD behaves clearly shows that he has not understood the term creativity. creativity is a voluntary process and happens only when the employee satisfied with his / her physiological needs and desire for self actualization skills which is creativity.
You can take the horse to waters, but you cannot make them to drink, this adage fits for your company. I would suggest that by forcing you will not get anything. Follow above need hierarchy theory of great management thinker Mr. Maslow, you will get all results.
Keep well

Dear Friend,
Rather than writing in the forum, better think twice clearly, you can suggest only valuable ideas and methods submitted rather than getting from all of them, some times we have to go and explain fully that it is not a way of getting ideas to implement. Let you suggest ideas if it is really necessary to change the situations.
Be bold and enhance the performance and simply giving ideas neither work nor give much needed guidance ...
kind regards..

Dear Dhanashree,

You have not given adequate information about your company. What is your finished product or service? How have you measured your business costs?

Cutting down salaries of the employees since they do not provide ideas for cost cutting is poor way of cost cutting. There are whole lot of business costs. You need to concentrate on these costs. For average manufacturing company, following costs are important:

a) Cost of raw material in stores

b) Cost of WIP inventory

c) Cost of the finished products in the warehouse

d) Distribution cost to distribute the finished goods to the wholesalers and retailers

e) Inventory carrying cost at the retail stores

f) Rejection cost at factory

g) Rejection cost for the material rejected by wholesalers or retailers

h) Cost of stock out

i) Capacity costs

j) Set up costs

The list of above costs is only a sample one. Possibly these may not be applicable to you. The real business performance depends on ability to identify and measure the costs. You need to assign the above costs to some HOD. However, mere assignment cost is not everything. Your company needs to know how to measure the above costs scientifically. However, this is much easier said than done. For this, you need to hire services of some consultant.

If you wish to identify the costs associated with your business then you can hire my services. For more information, call me on my mobile.

Hello Dhanashree,

Further to what Dinesh Divekar has mentioned, let's look @ the situation from a different perspective.

Firstly, pl elaborate on YOUR role/designation. Are you in HR?

Next, w.r.t. your remark "He is giving reason all the time i.e. funds problem, we will think and afterwords no initiatives after reminders", looks like there surely has been a very BIG communication gap between your Management & the Employees.

By what you mentioned, I get the impression that the employees are mixing-up 'ideas' & 'wishes/likes'--the later most often would involve money.

Pl note that NOT ALL creative suggestions involve money--in fact a very major chunk of ideas in an Organizational setup DON'T need money to be implemented.

Let's take a particular activity that you are right now doing by following a particular process. Can't you think of ways to do the same task DIFFERENTLY with less time OR money OR effort? I am sure you can--now don't say that the existing processes are good & perfect--like the Quote by Shakespeare goes: "Nothing is perfect however perfect it is". There's always room for improvement.

Why not try this & give your feedback to the Management for a change & see the difference in response from your MD? Forget about other employees for now--let the First step come from you & see the response. The others are sure to follow you.

Since you haven't mentioned your function or role, it's tough to guide you more focusedly. But Dinesh Divekar has mentioned quite a few areas where ideas can get generated by the line employees--NOT the Management.

In a way, your MD has thrown you guys a challenge--to grab it OR crib is YOUR choice. And also, pl note that the process adopted by your MD also ENSURES YOU GET THE CREDIT once your idea is accepted & implemented......pl don't take this angle lightly. Corporate world is full of instances where the boss gets/takes the credit for any good idea [and the junior gets the flak for whatever goes wrong]. So, YOUR interest is automatically protected.

@ Jagat Kumar--

I feel impelled to mention a few aspects vis-a-vis your comment "creativity is a voluntary process and happens only when the employee satisfied with his / her physiological needs and desire for self actualization skills which is creativity"--I am afraid I don't agree with you.

Surely 'creativity' is a voluntary process--but psychologically, it comes-out NOT when the individual's [I don't think it's limited to 'employees' alone] needs are satisfied BUT when the individual FEELS INVOLVED in the situation. When the individual has a 'SENSE OF BELONGING' to any entity--be it Organization, Group, Family, etc--creative ideas flow without being asked for. Quite often, the most creative ideas emanate when the chips are down--NOT when everyone's stomach is full.

The Best example of this is the creativity [or the lack of it] of Govt/PSU employees. Hope you get the point.

Your boss has a confused system of management.
.His ideas of creativity are confused, but what he has asked for needs to be accepted whole heartedly and as a challenge.
It rankles when you have to be compulsorily creative, but see the positive side of it,you are racking your brains, thinking deeply and that will make you more knowledgeable, get in depth knowledge of the processes and products of your company.
Some one senior enough should bell the cat and tell the boss, that stopping pay/bonus is not the way ahead.
The boss should recognise and publicly appreciate good ideas received and if some idea is unimplementable due to funds, explain to the person who suggested the idea so as to avoid de motivating employees.
Tactful handling is required as boss is having what he feels modern ways of innovation and getting cost cutting or new ideas.
