Dear Friend,
To my knowledge accounting/finance department is one of the key department in company. They holds entire data of company. According to Statutory norms company has to maintain records Like Cash, Bank books, General Ledgers, Debtors, Creditors and statutory records like ESI, P.F, Service Tax, Central Excise , STPI etc...
If company want to maintain all these records, they need a person who specially trained called an accountant.
company point of view to know the accurate profits as of date and where they stand now, They should appoint a person who maintain the all financial transactions in systematic way according to GAAP called accountant.
Generally Accountant qualification starts from B.com to Charted Accountancy.
in today's job maket we cannot define the accountant job in one scenario, he has to work in diverse of fields.. Since we are all working in Pvt companies to sustain our jobs we have to comply the management guidelines.
any way I will try to elaborate some of Accountant roles in company .
Track the day to day expenditure of company/Firm as well as Income too
Preparing of Vouchers like general, Petty cash, Bank etc.. with supporting documents.
need to take Autorisation signatures/approvals from above payments from management
Entering the vouchers in accounting software's like Tally/ Focus etc.. or Manual writing
Raising the Invoices or Bills where company made sales/Services etc...
Follow up of the receipts from vendors where company made sales/ Service etc..
If company is small organisation need to taking care of Payroll and calculation of P.F , P.T , ESI according to statutory norms for company employees.
Maintain of Fixed Asset registrars and tracking of the same
General Office Administration Work
monitoring of Cash and Bank Positions
Preparing of Cheques for making the payments to various vendors or govt. payments etc..
Maintain of all statutory and company records in systematic way.
Preparing of Bank, Vendors Reconciliation statements
Preparing of statutory returns for P.F , P.T , ESI, STPI etc. periodically
Preparing of challans for making payment for P.F , P.T ,ESI , TDS , Service Tax with in stipulated time
Maintaining of Petty cash payments
Preparing of reports according to Management and other departments if they required
Preparing of Trading and Profit and Loss account and Balance Sheets on yearly basis to submit Income Tax and ROC with in stipulated time according to Company Auditor guidance.
apart from above there are lot jobs to be done by accountants it is all depend on company and nature of business .....since we are all working in Pvt companies and we cannot stick for one specific job role and we should comply to management guidelines.
above answer is according to my knowledge if you wait some more time our seniors will give you appropriate answer .
