Hi,

Take the opportunity to relocate, work for some time, and see if things are getting better in the company. If not, look out for better prospects and then move out after serving the notice period. Today, it is only business, and whatever advice is given is for others, not for the person giving it. Business as usual, gentlemen.

Dear All,

(My parent company is not in India; it is one of the prestigious Group of Companies in the UAE.)

This situation is nothing but a reflection of "RECESSION."

Mr. Rajkumar understood things more clearly. However, when working in the Middle East, you should be cautious as there are cut-throat policies and dog-eat-dog philosophies in almost all companies despite the higher packages they offer.

You can expect ANYTHING the next morning! They may take back your vehicle, cut allowances, send you on open long leave, or even terminate your employment without any notice. (How many of you know that termination can happen abruptly - you arrive at work as usual, and the receptionist stops you, saying: "Sorry Sir, I have an instruction from the legal department - management - not to allow you inside the office from today!")

On the evening of 29/09/09, I received a cc email - distributed among all other division managers - from our parent company's branch in a different emirate, stating they are going to reduce their workforce by 40%! A list was attached, mentioning that the listed employees would be stopped from work starting 1st October 09.

Even if I refuse the offer for the position of 'logistics controller,' the current logistics controller could be terminated, and the company might outsource the work to another freight forwarding agency.

As Mr. R P Swamy said, "If the situation changes, everything will change." The Chairman is really tough - if I try to make a slight bend, it will break. I cannot use 'ifs' with him.

What I did was write to the Chairman, requesting to be called back from Africa under any condition, willing to work in any suitable role according to my diverse field experience at any branches in the UAE, without a salary reduction. No reply for 2 days - instead, I received another list for a 40% reduction in employees!

Dear Sanjay, there is practically no notice period or formalities in the Middle East. Those are only described in labor laws or if you go to the labor court. If your current employer finds out you are seeking another job, they might intentionally delay your termination or even try to impose a year ban or a lifetime ban in the country, depending on their hold in the immigration department.

In such cases, only wise, steady, and slow moves will be helpful, I believe.

This is the update.

Dear members, please share your views.

With many thanks for the supporting messages...

Best regards, [Your Name]
