Hi everyone,
When it comes to not-for-profit organizations, the entire concept of human resources change! there are no total-reward systems, no incentives and positions faithfully occupied by non-productive people!
I'd like you all to comment on how, under such an environment, a competitive and productive strategy can be formulated.

Hey friend,

I don't know how much you know about the non profitable organizations but the scenario you have put forward is not fully justifiable.

The NGO's working in India have much money generation rather then the money oriented firms.It depends on which of the problem they are helping out.

The aspect you had said is that about a HRM department working for an non profit organization has very different monetory aspect compared with the profit oriented organizations.

I should not reveal this but i will give you an example,one of the known NGO had helped out the tsunami victims with the blankets and monetory help.They had showed that they had got good money and other accessories for the needy and had dispatched them to the tsunami victims.But internally many things happened.

The department which handles the money and the other aspect of thsi eat away much of the money and the records maintained where quite different from what had issued.You won't believe but the HR department earns the equal share to that of the accounts department.[I was talking about the big non profit organizations].

Indian people have lots of black money which they put in these NGO and tell that we are serving the nation but in the internal aspects the person giving the money and the person taking the money for the well being of the society are becoming rich and not the needy.

These may be small aspects but there are large money transactions done at higher level.Look i can tell you about this but can we make any changes for that,not at all.We all have become materialistic.

SO NEVER SAY THAT HRM IN NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION DON''T HAVE MUCH SCOPE,THEY HAVE MUCH SCOPE AND LONG LIFE THEN A PROFIT ORIENTED ORGANIZATION HRM DEPARTMENT.

Dear Sandeep,
Thanx for your reply... it was informative. The issue i am trying to raise, is however, different. You see, i am talking about ALL public sector organizations which are working as 'not-for-profit'... the department of police, the military organizations, the service departments of the goverment, United nations, there are so many examples.
Now, keeping in view the working environment of these organizations, I must say that trying to bring a CHANGE in these types of organzations is quite difficult! its because you cant find the motive or means to motivate people...to let the people absorb the change! they are so frozen, that Kurt Lewin's unfreezing just cannot take place!!
My question again... how do we begin to shift an organization from a culture of authoritarianism to one of progression and output... how do we empower the people in such a scenario...

Dear Adnan,

I am realy ashamed and sorry to say that we cant change organisations such a Police dept or any govt offices, and others you may have mentioned just like that. They are not acting on their own also. There are also lot of external forces which may prevent a Honest Police Officer from doing his job.

A govt employee who wants to help a Sr. Person for his / her pension funds cant just like that issue the same. There are lots of process to be followed. And some times (Very shame on us), when the employee is realy trying to help the person, because of such factors when it gets delayed, we may be scolding, cursing him or try to bribe him.

Dont you think these actions will actualy demotivate such honest persons. It will...

The fault is on our side also. How many times have we stoped before the stop line in a signal. Even in a temple que we wont stand patiently.

If we want to see such organisations to perform well then the change should happen in the overall society.

Correct me if i am wrong.

The issue you have mentioned is different to the issue you had raised at first.
There is lot of difference between the first question and the next question.
For the second question,the answer is that the employees working for public sector have good knowledge rather then a private sector.But they don't have that influencial bosses for the growth.
In public sector there are two things which an employee has in mind that once he gets the job its very difficult for the employer?superviosr to remove him from his job and the other is if he works or not there is the salary in time and even the other benefits.
The departments are very old and follow the old process that is true but the process had to be changed through the government rather than the employees working there.
