Dear Sarwan,

Your friend has taken to his heart change of his department. It is unfortunate to note that in spite of attaining managerial status he is resisting to work in some department.

Any chance to work in some other department should be seen as an opportunity to learn something new. Exposure to different departments helps in shift from "specialist" to "generalist" role. Against this backdrop, rather than welcoming this change, your friend is protesting it. With this attitude, how will he become "General Manager"?

If your friend wishes to step into the shoes of General Manager, he need to know about the all the departments, that includes technical and non-technical departments like Accounts or Security. However, one must work in these departments to get the first hand knowledge.

This is not at all harassment. For one's personal growth, mental barriers which a person imposes on himself have to be demolished. There are large number of persons who are into very different field and doing very well. Who knows your friend might prove himself very well in the new department. Outsiders always think differently and he might come up with some innovative idea also. Therefore, tell your friend to embrace the change rather than resisting it!

Thanks,

Dinesh Divekar

I fully agree with Mr. Divekar.
In my one of earlier organisations 2 Site Accountants (Commerce Graduate) who were working in different Project sites taken initiative and learned technical work while performing their site accounts job. In a very short span they learned each & every aspects of technical work and became Construction Managers. They also handled the entire Projects to the Magagement satisfaction. Not only that they used to discuss technical issues with EIL Team (Engineers India Ltd) and giving solutions for the technical problems while handling the Projects.
Your friend is Production Manager, that means he must be having Managerial Skills. So why worry let him learn new things, give some suggestions, ideas which he come across while performing his duty. God knows, he may find the new job is more interesting and he may grow there.
Tnx & Regds,

Sir, in Government jobs also there are instructions to rotate / shift the officers from one department/section to another after some period say two years / three years. This is not done with a view to harass any officer, but primarily with a view to ensure that the officers also know the work of other departments/sections as well as vigilance point of view. Top level government functionaries like IAS, IPS officers are transferred to some other departments/locations even though initially they may not know the working of said department. Sometimes such officers are in agriculture, sometimes in defence and sometimes in finance. This is not harassment, but very challenging, educative as well as improve and wider the understandings of the officers concerned towards their master ( Govt of India/State). This is not only beneficial to the officers concerned, but also their family members especially growing up children who alongwith their father/mother visit various places in India and gain a very supportive and educative knowledge for success in their future lives.

Appreciate all the posts on this. No doubt one has got prerogative to stick to one's known field. But it appears, there is nothing left in Chemistry dept. that's why the GM trying to shift to engg ??. If I'm correct all Engg. discipline students learn basic engg. subjects during their first year of curriculum and then branch out to their chosen subjects. Therefore it is not going to be thus far as if in wonder land for Sarwan's colleague. Why not acquire more knowledge in other fields, after all they will not, hopefully, cut his salary. Thank god he is not sending him to bench.(sorry if this will hurt him, unintentional too). Take for e.g. my own experience, basically I am a finance man, but was posted to a project, had to handle HR, welfare, taxation, procurement & storage, audit and above all some construction of qrs for staff for over 500, water facilities to the plant & colony etc. I could do everything very successfully to the surprise of enggs. If I'm not mistaken, due respect to engrs. I did excel where engrs. either failed or not attempted to. I could narrate one of my successful tasks I handled -there were acute shortage of water from within our premises for both industrial as well as colony uses. When I took charge I found lakhs of Rs.was being spent only for buying water from local contractors and it was in short supply ultimately resulting lower production. Borewells within our premises failed, with scanty/less than avg rainfall, no adequate storage system. I took it on, consulted state water dept. took our own engrs. into confidence, finalised plans what is possible. With their help arranged to locate water resources at nearby areas, obtained necessary permission from locals, pressed drillers for 3 borewells in a day, procured the reqd materials the next day, installed them on the same day (pipline of 2.5 kms.), managed teething troubles and water problem was solved in a matter of 15 days to the delight of everyone. Now also our plant is the main source of water to entire village nearby (but I left the co. on VRS). Not only this, one more such project I took which is though not of my domain but since it was benefiting our plant no one raised a word against me but everyone cooperated which I avoid here to narrate to save your time. I was allowed to be there only for 6 months and was tranfd back to HQs to shoulder higher responsibilities in our own dept. This is not to boost my image but only to give insight as to how willingness and proactive approach could do wonders. So let him think positively, to don't start in a 'touch me not' mind set. Nothing wrong in learning nuances of other depts. which ultimately goes to prove his capabilities and pave way to grow up the ladder and career building. All the best to him.
