Dear all,

Seven years after the murder of the vice-president (human resources) of Coimbatore-based Pricol Limited, the Madras High Court has confirmed the life sentence awarded to two union leaders charged of the murder.

Following unrest among workers, the HR vice-president Roy J. George was attacked right inside his cabin in the company premises, located in Periyanaickenpalayam by a group with iron rods in 2009. He sustained multiple head injuries in the attack, and later died in a private hospital.

An alumnus of IIM-Calcutta, he was reportedly spearheading efforts to bring back normalcy in the company and had dismissed 42 employees of the company over labour issues.

Following the murder, charges were framed against 27 employees and trade union leaders of the company. On December 3, 2015, a Special Court for Bomb Blast Cases, Coimbatore, sentenced eight persons to double life imprisonment and acquitted 19 others.

Assailing the conviction, an appeal was moved in the High Court. Six others acquitted

After concluding the trial, a Division Bench of Justices S. Nagamuthu and N. Authinathan confirmed the life sentence imposed on two union leaders, Manivannan and Ramamurthy, and acquitted six others of all charges.
