The fundamental difference is that you earn leave as it is linked to the number of days worked by you during the calendar year. The more the number of days you work in a year, the more leave you earn and such leave is admissible for a limited number of occasions in a year.Annual leave can be accumulated subject to a maximum limit and is enacashable on leaving employment/ retirement Casual leave is allowed in a specified number say 10 or 12 days in a year without any reference to the number of days worked by an employee and is meant to meet sudden contingencies or emergencies.they are not encashable and noncumulative mostly.
Hope this clarifies your understanding.

Dear NC,
Privilege or earned leave is same and have no difference. According to the prevailing law, an employee earn one day leave on each 20 working days in a calender year subject to his attendance should not be less than 240 days in a calender year or 2/3rd of the working days in other cases where employee works for a broken period of calender year. The leave so earned in current year can be availed in next year in three occasions subject to moving application 15 days in advance. It can be accumulated upto 30 days further subject to any other provisions contained in certified standing orders of the company / firm and can be en cashed on leaving the employment.
As far as casual and sick leaves are concerned, at present seven leaves are allowed on both heads in a calender year which can be availed proportionately.
In certain organizations, these leaves may be over and above to these prescriptions.

Annual leave is also known as privilege leave. Both refer to earned leave only.Annual leave is admissible to an employee during his tenure of service in the same company only. It is not transferable to a new company which an employee may join latter. An employee can encash annual leave on his leaving a company as per company's policy or the law applicable to the company. As Apex management said, the annual leave earned in the current year, can be availed by the employee in the next year .However, some companies may allow an employee annual leave on pro rata basis to the extent earned by him in the current year, if he exhausts his entire annual leave at credit. It depends up on the company's leave policy.
