Emotional Development

Emotion is any agitation of disturbance of mind, feeling, passion, any vehement or excited mental state. There are hundreds of emotions with their blends and variations.

Distortions within

• Anger – Fury, Outrage, animosity, irritability etc.

• Sadness – Sorrow, Grief, Gloom, Loneliness, dejection etc.

• Fear – Anxiety, Concern, Edginess, Terror etc.

• Enjoyment – Happiness, Relief, Thrill, Rapture, Satisfaction etc.

• Love – Acceptance, Trust, Kindness, Devotion etc.

• Surprise – Shock, Amazement, Wonder etc.

Aspects to Develop / Enhance

1. Self – Awareness – Observing yourself; building a vocabulary for feelings.

2. Personal Decision – Making – Examining your actions and knowing their consequences.

3. Managing Self – Finding ways to handle fears, anxieties and sadness.

4. Handling Stress – Value of exercise, guided imagery, Relaxation etc.

5. Empathy – Understanding others’ feelings and appreciating the differences.

6. Self – Acceptance- Seeing yourself in positive light; being able to laugh at yourself at times.

7. Personal Responsibility – Recognising the consequences of your actions and decisions.

8. Assertiveness – Stating your concerns and feelings without anger or passivity.

9. Group Dynamics – Co-operation, how to lead and when to follow.

Some useful tips

• Prayer / Meditation helps unburden many emotional imbalances.

• Cultivate the taste for watching the nature.

• Listen to good music.

• Develop +ve emotions like love, respect, Kindness etc.

• Avoid –ve emotions like anger, jealousy, guilt, fear, worry, ego, inferiority, greed etc.

• Stop complaining. Instead of blaming darkness everywhere, light a candle if you can.

• Stop blaming, instead take action.

• Do all that you possibly can.

• Never Quit – ANTS never Quit

o If they are headed somewhere and you try to stop them, they will look for another way.

o They will climb over, they will climb under, and they will climb around.

o They keep looking for another way.

The lesson is Never quit looking for a way till you get to where you have aimed to go.
