It must be probation period not prohibition period Yes probation period can be extended if the employee is not upto the mark of performance as per the appraisal

Period of probation can be extended further, if the performance of an employee is not satisfactory, provided there is a clause permitting such extension in the offfer letter/letter of appointment.

yes probation period can be extended as very well said by the Mr.Saji and Mr.B.Sai Kumar....
When you extended the probation period for an employee , the letter is issued it should in such a manner that it should be motivating but not discouraging him.
Can draft the letter -
We wish to inform you that we have evaluated your performance during the above period and are of the opinion that your performance is not in line with Company's expectations. Based on the evaluation it has been decided to extend your probation for a further period of ________ months i.e. upto __________ Month.
Your superiors are more than willing to provide you with all inputs, knowledge and guidance to help you perform as per expectations and grow in your career.
The letter should issue confidentially between - The person, HOD/Manager of the his and HR.
We have to keep in mind of retention of the employee and who knows he would be asset in future .

Hello Darshu,
The Probation period could be extended as already pointed out by all our members.
However the HR must have an authorised internal mail from the
concerned department in which the employee whose probation is
extended is serving.
