Dear HR Professional,
A strange issue came in front of me, one of my employee is under "Depression" due to which he takes frequent leaves, does not give value addition to the job and few of the time unresponsive as well.
But he was working with my organization since 3yrs and was always a good performer.
We got to know when we saw so many frequent leave request and ask for the reason than after long discussion he shared about his health issue.
Now how we deal with this situation, we can t fire him, as he is still trying to manage his job. What best we (organization) could do to help him come out or start performing in our organization as he use to do before.
Need people to share the feedback after seriously thinking about this concern.
Best Regards

Hi Monika,
It's not as easy and clear situation as it seems to be. Since this employee has been a good performer for last 3 years and all of a sudden he has undergone some dilemma / trauma due to whatever reasons, therefore as a Line Manager, it becomes your onus to hold a one on one discussion with him to understand his current situation and the repercussions that could impact his performance and your organization as a whole.
Take him out for some time in a conducive environment. Once you have a clarity on this situation, you will be in a better position to take a wise decision without having a direct impact on him or yourself both.
Thanks

Depression is like other medical illness and it can be treated with help of medicine.. i suggest you to grant him medical leaves.. as course of medicine continues for 3 month in general.. month one straight leaves.. and after that he may continue..
it all depends your organizational setup..

Hello Monika Marwah,

The Link Anita mentioned surely can be used as the First step towards finding the solution.

But first & foremost you need to be clear on the cause(s)/reason(s) of the current situation of the employee--especially since you say he was a good performer earlier. Based on the little inputs you mentioned, it points to some personal problem(s) & MAY NOT be related to any official problems.

Suggest FIRST have a chat in some informal environment [to keep him at-ease] & get answers to the following points/aspects--if not already done:

1] Has he taken medical/psychiatric/psychological help already? If yes, what's the prognosis? Is he under medication?

2] What is/are the cause(s) of his depression?

3] Usually there are 2 ways of handling such situations: (1) to try to resolve the situation that caused it--IF it can be. The presumption here is that once the causal situation is resolved, the person would normalize. (2) to enable/help the person COPE with the situation effectively--especially if the cause(s) CAN'T be resolved [like death of close relatives] OR may be impractical to resolve.

If you can give more inputs, the members will be in a better position to suggest better.

Also, pl mention if this is in India or USA--since your location says you are in United States Duluth. For many psychological/psychiatric issues, the social/cultural aspects too become important.

Falling the prey of depressio may be having many reasons and therefore firstly u need arrange a meeting with the employee to actually identify the root cause of the depression and then giving friendly communication can lead to an effctive outcome especially when the employee has served the org.for last three years. He or she deserves the proper treatment both on humanitarian as well as on corporate ethic grounds.

support what imok said above. U can ask the person to do the following. it's really effective:
ask him to watch cow's eye for about 15-20min everyday with positive feelings. After some days, he will get the difference.

from my view you or your anyone from your organization needs to consult with him as a friend try to understand his problem first , get more information about his situation as well as his behavior then only you can able to sort out the problem, and fire him, it will not the solution ever.
