Hi,
I am working in a FMCG company. Please advise me how to tackle the office gossips. I am becoming the vicitim of office gossips. My peers who are maligning me do not come with facts upon questioning them. One of my colleague who always backbites about evreryone but praises the person in front.
I also brought to the notice of senior management for any non adherence and non cooperation for work getting done through mails. If I speak up I am getting bad reputation of raising voices named aggressive and furious.
Please suggest how to deal in the above sitatuions.

I agree office gossips ain't a good one. It can make employees work on layoffs that were never true and can make work non-productive.

Please consider the follwoing which I personally follow when such act of gossiping takes place - Consider if a gossip is untrue or callous affecting your morale then you should intervene. If you think that it is flippant just dump it.

If you are the direct victim of hearing the gossip which you think is in appropriate to you inform the Human Resources team or an immediate supervisor or HOD for the same. As a famous saying though "Keep personal life out of professional", personal hearsay can ruin career. You can be directly involved in case if you reach the gossip. Unless if it is a corpoarte issue, escalate it to your supervisor immediately. As it is necessary for clarifying what the real story is, to put away the false rumours.

Give them loads of work to do in case if they start chit-chatting (a room for gossiping). Let them know that you donot care their amateur back-bitting... so pay no attention to such tweaks.

Hope this will defintely help you as I have followed them in a way.

How will you judge one who is gossiping or who is not?

How did you get that one is doing the same, how?

How these things are bothering you, and what made you feel like that actually?

Could you please share something about you? I meant to say, what post you are holding there and do you have authority or power to make changes in your office policies.

Suppose, a person came to you and say that he/she is the part of a conversation/gossiping but came to you for telling these all things, is also a culprit and you must not trust this person or would say ignore him/her. And, if anyone who claim that he/she has heard something by someone somewhere about you or about anyone which was not good or likewise, and came to you with that, you must not take it seriously but to tackle wisely. You have to ignore these things first but actually has to take action without expressing or reacting on this. This is the very first thing that you have to do here and would be a wise action.

See, you can’t directly pointing out anyone that he/she was doing or saying anything wrong or was involved in any office Political conversation/gossiping until you find the truth, and to find the truth you have to take action as I stated above.

Second, it would be better to make your office culture and environment better and friendly by taking some appropriate actions. In this work, the articles by going through the links below mentioned can help you.

Third, until you share what actually you are experiencing and are going through, we can’t give you the actual solution that you required here but as you said that you found one who always backbites can handle him/her by being nice or expressing your objection by a friendly tone that will alert him/her. The best thing to tackle the people like your this colleague is to ignore or handle. Now its on to you what you’d like to do

Dear Ms. Sharmila,
Many thanks for your inputs. I acutally ignore many office gossips and I did brought to the notice of my immediate manager the issues which are spoiling my reputation but that has not made much difference. In fact, every time I raise my voice for which i found is not correct, I am labelled as a person to be making an issue. I think the need of the hour is to keep quiet, behave carefully, wait and watch.

Im glad that you realize this and recognize the truth.
Without going further I would like to wish you for your bright future. And also wanna say that people must not believe on ears but mind and self recognition is also important.
Moreover, there is every other side of anything which sometime we never feel or recognize at the time of problem or situation we are undergoing but if we take the corrective and wise action, work with patience can prevent the problems ...
