I upload the ppt and the content I presented while speaking at Lotus Business School , in Pune. I thank the college authorities for considering me for the session. Please share your feedback. I want to know how can this be worked better. This was attended by 70 students from both First and Second year.

It went for two hours, with brain storming and exercises. The presentation slides have pointers. Hence, please consider this long content while reviewing my work. I thankyou for your time taken to contribute your effort .

The topic was about learning, virtually for the real world. It then moved on to, how IT Industry works and the current options in it. The last part is about, how can students use the digital world to build themselves.

Learning : I shared my career path, with each and every role, I held, to point out what helped me learn . I talked about the mentors I found and how every situation I worked in was different to what I was taught. I appealed them, to use their internship to observe and look for the escalations and how the managers are handling them. Learn to look for information and working with people in hierarchy.

IT Industry may show a conservative growth , hence hire in lesser numbers, but the need for specialties will grow in time. Building niche skills, while working in a broad role, will make them valuable in the long run.

The roles and compensation are relevant to today's scenario. What they need to understand, is how should they make them selves billable, to the current salary levels and how many ways will these roles change , before they reach the final placements .

The designations are a framework of responsibilities. A handhold through the hierarchy is important to realize the amount of values, one needs to generate , hence build those connecting technical and functional competencies.

I shared how career path works. Career progression will create different anecdotes for each individual. Here, I asked the students how far have they worked professionally and what were they considering after their course. This was an exhaustive discussion as every student with a professional background was making a huge transition not just in terms of roles but sectors.

Digital characterization is what they knew more than me :) I shared how the employers are using it and would be , as predicted by the Payscale research. How to build up a professional presence and their own university is what I could share.

I told them what online communities are and how does this help them build a knowledgebase with a dynamic learning. The access to the knowledge will brand them, when they are adding on with what they are learning. Online curation of their work at the end of two years will emphasize the knowledge gained. The resume will be searched along with the digital foot prints of the students, hence marked knowledgeably :)

The option to connect with leaders and learn from their words is enormous. It was interesting to brainstorm why did the knowledge leaders, whom they had tried to connect in LinkedIn and other Social domain, didnt work and how to work it out. They shared how the presence of these leaders inspired them. Hence , talking about the rules that they would use to define themselves, got easier.

The last part was how this virtual world is opening up with professional opportunities. Not just starting firms , but find a next-generation job , upto creating them. I shared, when I completed my MBA, none of my batchmates were hired as Community Manager. It was hardly known! Yet in six years I am serving the role, that too how it evolved to build on my learning.

During my MBA, Dr. Madhukar Shukla , from XLRI had asked me to look for a cool virtual HR Community that can help me learn, the way I want to. This led me to find this community in 2006. And the rest become a history :)

I am interested in knowing what you talked about in these places:

We've mostly always thought about how people probably get to the content in an online community - the design, the infrastructure, the content itself - but our recent discussions and the changes we made to the network is becoming more about what people expect from a real community. The focus was always learning but now, we are trying to make this also about the where you reach after the learning. What influence you have with the goodwill you created in the community.

Online communities have existed since the birth of the Internet - and frankly it's the same as hosting an event. How good you are at managing people, and the atmosphere you are able to create, what need you are catering to, define the success of the community. Facebook is the biggest (995 Million users) because it bring the most social part of our life online - our friends and relatives. Compare that with Linkedin (174 million users) and you'll see a steep drop as it caters to our need to network with other professionals (it's about the connection count isn't it?) - then there is twitter (140 million users) and you see the numbers drop a little more as it mainly thrives on celebrity statuses - which is a bit less important - which is why now their focus has become "to be about News" (which is probably the correct use) and the marketing budget is now going towards that.

Then we have us - Cite.Communities with 8 million users - still in its infancy, still bootstrapping. But we are growing rapidly mainly because people are realizing that a lot of the learning happens with discussions and sharing and by creating real connections with the people and with the community (something we are working towards). Quora is another which is coming up in a big way - but that's mainly tech focused.

In the future, virtual communities will no longer remain virtual - they will be by your side (more intimately than in your mobile device) with the use of vision and contextual feeds. But to learn you'll still need to make that push to show up - learning the matrix way where programs are implanted into your brain is probably still a few generations away.

It is great to know about your guest lecture in a B School. The presentation prepared by you is simple and easily understandable. Instead of making the presentation on online community if you select some other industry then you can go some more indepth.

I found the slide of a MIND MAP on Managing Digital Citizenship too complicated; searched the web and found it at how to focus in the age of distraction - Google Search
It is always prudent to include the reference to material which is not our own.
