The core of HR functions starts from Personnel Department only. This is because it is from Personnel department that you will be able to learn statutory compliance, wage and compensation management, negotiations and trade union relations etc. That department will give you an exposure which is entirely different from your class room learning. Since an HR man is not competent without exposure to Labour laws and industrial relation practice, it is always good to get into Personnel Department. Once you get knowledge about pay fixation, statutory compliance, filing of returns etc, you can use it even when you have climbed the higher ladders of HR profession. On the other hand, if you confine yourself in recruitment and other softsides of HR, you may find it difficult to face the real problems especially when you become the head of HR and when you are asked to deal with trade union leaders who are better informed of the rights of employees and the changes being taken place in labour laws.
