Dear All
We are advising to use Safety Harness with lanyard length of 1.8m to all our employees...
Why we should buy a Safety Harness with Lanyard Length of 1.8m only... Why not less than this or more than this, 1.5m or 2m or 3 m...
What is the exact reason behind keeping the idle lanyard length as 1.8meter?
Please put some light into the topic...

the term here for defining the length is called Fall Clearance.
the definition of the same is -
In arresting a fall in a controlled manner, the distance required to arrest the fall must be considered. Federal OSHA limits the fall distance to six feet unless the specific system is designed by a "qualified person" meeting the requirements of OSHA 29CFR1910.66 appendix c. The user also may not fall so as to strike protrusions or adjoining walls during the six-foot fall.
The safe fall distance is a function of the "fall factor" and the deployment of the "energy absorbers". As a rule of thumb, for a factor two fall, a fall distance of approximately six meters will be required. This is equivalent to two stories of a building. If the fall clearance is less than this, the worker may strike the ground before fall is arrested.

So nice to see you back into the forum discussions affter a long time... You come with a great helping inputs... Thanks for the same...

Following sentence is from the link which you provided:

""Free fall considerations." The employer and employee should at all times be aware that a system's maximum arresting force is evaluated under normal use conditions established by the manufacturer, and in no case using a free fall distance in excess of six feet (1.8 m). A few extra feet of free fall can significantly increase the arresting force on the employee, possibly to the point of causing injury. "

So now what my question is instead of 1.8m, if we go for 1.5m lanyard this will be more effective one na... Why not 1m lanyard... This will minimize the free fall... Please clarrify my doubt...

Now what the other practical issue which is in my mind is, as on today in our plant we are using two types of safety harness:

1. Full Body Safety Harness with Double Lanyard and Scaffolding Hook
2. Full Body Safety Harness with Energy Absorber Double Lanyard and Scaffolding Hook.

The second mentioned harness is advisable to use above 6meter only. ie. where we are getting a free fall distance of more than 6 meter as the energy absorber's stretched webbing will open in case of fall...

The first one we may advise to use starting from 1.8m upto 6meter... What is the problem if we keep on using this above 6 meter...

Now let me share a practical example... A gang of workers start erecting scaffolding... They want to do it upto a height of 10meter... So which type of safety harness we should suggest them to wear??? 1st mentioned one or 2nd one... It's not possible to advise them to use 1st one till 6 meter and then you change and start using 2nd one... Also it's not practically possible to issue two harness to a single worker...

So please let me know your views forum members...

Hope to get a solid solution to this problem from the forum...

Result of force on human body will be worse when fall from more than 1.8 meter height. Energy K = mgh ie. m=mass , weight of the person, g = Gravity force, h = Height so 70x9.81x1.8 = 1236
Anyone have question on this or whether is this right?
