Peer recognition program can be launched in various ways in an organisation, generally you can have such programs either a formal way- where whole organisation is involved and the goals of peer recognition are aligned with organisational/departmental goals.

For example: The Management keeps a budget for peer recognition, the program is launched on intranet, it can be noticed which department is using the program and which is not, also this way you can send as many recognition in just few minutes also the management keeps a control and check on it.

The second way is an informal way, where you launch a program department wise, here an employee can be recognized for anything such as:

For giving a great idea

For mentoring new employees

Is a helping hand in hour of need

and so on..

This is a very cost effective and fun program, just make sure the competitiveness does not come in the way of such programs, as human nature is such we tend to pull each other's leg when on the same level. If HR and Management keeps a check it can be a good initiative in organisation and induce mentoring at peer level also.
