I had gone through the report on the "Best Employers in India" and culled some of the following best practices followed by the Top 25 Best Employers:
I am sharing this list, and I hope you would add on to the same, or give some new ideas to carry these through.
In case anybody has the policy details on these activities from the companies mentioned alongside each practice, please do share.
1. Leadership Development Centre (senior most leaders conduct workshops – Infosys)
2. Employee taskforces with HR as just a facilitator (They have both the budget and the empowerment to take decisions which ensures successful completion of the project. – P&G)
3. Flexible working arrangements (HP)
4. Additional leave of 10 days for employee marriage (HP)
5. 10 days if employee is preparing for higher education (HP)
6. 8 weeks for legally adopting a child (HP)

you have missed out "Classic stripes". The company makes lables for major cos, started in 1947 approx
It is voted as the second best place to work.. has beaten Infosys, etc
some salient points are:
average salary of a worker is 20000/- pm
lowest bonus is 14 % pa
last year every woker was given a motorcycle and females given automatic scooters
The company didnt have a HR manager all these years.
"Quality at source" ie same philkosphy as Sony.. No quality control dept.
last year in mumbai floods, management offered help to employees to rebuild homes.. out of more thna 300 people only 9 applied- people are too honest n dignified not to apply unnecassarily for help

swapna, as far as your concern on Hr aspect of the company in absence of a Hr manager is simple..
approx 100 yrs back JRD Tata wrote a small booklet named HR, he was concerned about one simple thing-- in large concerns, an employee may be facing one of the toughest times of his life while on the other hand the CEO is saddled with problems of running the enterprise.. this is where HR comes into picture. HR is not person specific, it is more about a aspect of doing business in the right way.
you must have gone through the annals of six sigma enterpprise. In india, nutan mumbai tiffin box suppliers charitable trust has been effectively supplying tiffin boxes with 1 system failure in 137 year. poor unlettered folks with no access to resources, beating big corporations. two of their oldest members now teach at IIMs..
