Hi everyone
I have to conduct an action research on "Why students cant improve their English language skills"
Can somebody plz guide me how to go about the survey n data collection.

Frame an open ended questions on this topic..

Define & quantify improve….like steps/levels one , two , three etc..

Data collection:-

Start with a sample of easy english para to be read by the particpants..the numbers would help..

Based on this ask questions as what stops them from improving their skills..

The Sacramento Public Library Literacy Service entered into a partnership with Mark Twain Elementary School to help the students with limited and non English language abilities whose test scores have demonstrated their need for assistance and whose families were willing to participate in this new program to do the following:

a) Increase their English language literacy skills

b) Improve their STAR test scores

Improve their self-esteem, especially as it relates to their literacy skills

Mark Twain Elementary Schools' API (Academic Performance Index) ranking was 4 in 1999/2000 (with 10 being highest and 1 being lowest). Similar schools ranked 7 in that same year. Students at or above grade level increased 15% overall in 1998-99 and increased only 2.8% in 1999-2000.

The EL's SAT 9 scores for last year showed only 6% gain at grade level in Reading, a 12% drop on grade level in Language Arts, and a 10% drop on grade level in Math.

A critical dimension of effective parent involvement is integrating the goals of the school with the goals of the surrounding community. The home/school collaboration is most likely to be successful when schools take the initiative to encourage families into the school environment with meaningful roles and choices that focus on the well being of the children.

Students' academic achievement, attitude and attendance may be closely related to the families' sense of belonging with the school community. Strengthening the family/school partnership will improve the goals in all areas of education

The involvement for EL parents in their children's education and learning is difficult because of language differences, that limit their understanding of homework assignments school policies, and uneasiness in the school's social setting. Because students' academic achievement, attitude, and attendance maybe closely related to the families' sense of belonging with the school community, strengthening the family/school partnership will help to improve the goals in all areas of education

The following is a brief overview of the ELLI project from beginning to the end of last school year.

February 20th , ELLI opened its' doors in grand style within the walls of The Family Resource Center on Using the translations skills of the Hiram Johnson High School students, letters and phone calls to parents resulted in very good turnout for our grant opening. . Parents were encouraged to sign their children up for the Awesome Arts Project, available on Tuesday and Thursday. The art projects instructor and 5 student teachers from CSUS used art as a medium to develop oral language skills after school on Wednesday and Friday afternoons.

March 19th,The Cultural Interactive Reading Project began, with story time and then was expanded with the addition of another ELLI staff person to include creative writing. (report attached). This part of ELLI was offered on Monday and Thursday afternoons, will include the parents this year.

March 23rd, 50 children's library books were chosen by a children's librarian and delivered to the Resource Center, and marked the beginning of a wonderful partnership between Colonial Heights branch library and the Principal of Mark Twain whereby 50 books were checked out on his personal card, returned (thank goodness) and a new batched sent over (book titles attached).

April 23, a walking field trip to Colonial Heights library, where children and their parents were treated to a library tour and encouraged to get a library card and check out books. This group was larger than expected, but library staff did a great job (40 children and adults phew).

May 4th , The Family Resource Center was packed with children and their parents for a Cinco De Mayo Celebration. Parents made customs, taught the children Mexican dances and read stories about Mexican heroes. The wonderful tiny piñatas decorated the room were made by the children in the art project. Homemade salsa, chips and fresh fruit drinks were the order of the day. (pictures enclosed.)

June 8th Farewell till next school year ELLI party. Boy this has been fun, but to be very honest, it was good to have the break. But we are ready for this new year and can't wait to see what ELLI has in story for us

These are some of the activities that we will be doing this school year:

Activities example: STORIES-YESTERDAY AND TODAY

Grandparents and parents can share stories from their countries, in their native languages, with children acting as translators. The stories and experiences of life in Mexico, Pakistan, Russia, and all the lands represented by the ELLI families can come alive for all. The children's original stories will become part of the story exchange. For example: A story told by a Hmong Grandparent, listening to the sounds of her voice and her grandchild translating and looking at the handmade Story Cloth as the story unfolds, can be a beautiful experience for all. Imagine the pride the grandparent and child will feel to share something so special.

Family involvement - the benefits are numerous and lasting. When parents are able to speak English and interact with their children's teachers, they can help their children both at home and at school. When parents are involved in their children's education in positive ways, children achieve higher grades and test scores, have better attendance at school, complete more homework, demonstrate more positive attitudes and behavior, graduate at higher rates, and have greater enrollment in higher education. Parents can emphasize good work habits, value learning and good character, set high expectations for their children, stay informed about their children's progress, and monitor their children's activities if they are able to communicate with the teachers and other community members.

The Story of My Family stories told by the parents, grand parents -to the child and a mentor.

Assisted by a student from Hiram Johnson, children would write these stories and be given school credit.

Some of the stories could become a play, used in the School Drama Club.

Picture This

Using disposable Polaroid cameras - students and their parents would take pictures of their families and scenes from home or family outings.

Using the scanner in the computer lab, the pictures would be scanned into a computer where they could be turned into various projects (calendars, cards, etc.)

Art Projects

Crafts - making frames for the Picture This project.

Projects that would highlight a particular culture ( Story Cloths, South American Worry Dolls, Pinatas, Kites from the Chinese culture, etc.) Using the example of the Hmong Story Cloth - children could make story cloths using their own culture as the picture.

Recipes - from near and far put into a collection to be shared with the whole school.

A Story Book About My Family.

Putting all of the above (pictures, stories, recipes) together in a wonderful book to be shared with the family and others.
