Recently in my company argument araised between me an one of managers on eave policy.
I had to take unplanned leave for 1 day and I informed my manager on this and I was supposed inform hr the same. I thought I will email hr on my leave once i report back to work. My hr sent me mail on my leave day that I need to inform hr either one day before or call hr if it is unplanned leave.
Now I had argument with hr on this and my stand was that as I already informed my reporting manager I was supposed send email to HR once I am back but my hr totally disagrees with this.
Now the question is whom we need to inform our leave first?
Reporting manager OR HR?

See it doesnt matter whether you taking unplanned or planned leave but you must inform about your leave with the reason to your immediate supervisor bcz he is your boss and you are reporting to him directly and responsible for the same. You can inform him by the email or a phone call and get the approval. HR will ask you himself to apply for the leave you have taken with the reason and you need to apply for the same with the approval (Leave approved mail by your BOSS) and submitted to HR (Forward to HR your leave approved mail/Hard Copy of approved leave application). Thats it.
There is no question of whether you are taking planned leave or unplanned leave but you must inform to your boss /supervisor...

If you see through HR's prospective, you should always keep HR into loop because he/she is the one who keeps track of your attendance/ payroll. It should be a common practice between you and your superior that if you are on leave he should forward your mail to HR department. It doesn't take much time in marking a CC to HR department and you are saved from lots of hassles.
On the other end, HR should also be little understanding and adjustive in this matter. If its a small or a medium size company, he/she can ask the concerned Manager or call the employee directly. I am sure, after doing this two-three times, the Managers/Employees themselves will start informing HR as well.

It is fault of your reporting manager he would've mailed or informed to HR that you are on leave and on your return to work you'll communicate personally regarding your leave. HR also should understand if it is informed by your reporting manager.
My view reporting manager is First then HR Manager. Like TO address to Reporting Manager and COPY TO: HR Manager.
again it's all depends on company policy.

It is correct that you are reporting to your boss,but since HR is responsible for Muster and salary, he or she must be informed about your leave. If it is unplanned or casual,ok a day or two, you need not inform but if you are availing a planned leave then it is your duty to take the approval of your leavs from your immediate boss on a leave application and forward the same to teh HR for their records

It is always the reporting manager first to whom you inform. Mean time,inform HRD as well preferably by email or at least by telephone call if at all you are not in a position to send a mail.
In your case, the reporting manager should have also taken the initiative & responsibility to inform HRD having known the actual grounds of your leave. But being the person who has availed the leave, you equally have the responsibility to ensure that the same is intimated to HRD. Please remember that HRD is ultimately accountable for leave matters of each & every employee.

While taking leave whether planned or unplanned you need to seek permission from your reporting Boss on phone call, email or SMS. At the same time inform / update your HR about your leave. It would help hr to manage your leave details / payroll

Hi,
Your boss requires your presence in the company for his work. However, the HR should know that you are in leave or not. I feel you have to report to your boss, the leave should be accepted by your boss and it should be intimate to HR team.
But what is the policy you are following we are not aware!!! may be a policy which is not followed by other companies!!!!
