Dear Upendra Tiwari,

Workplace fights are common, but the situation is terrible if a physical battle occurs in which blows are exchanged or the members from opposite sides are kicked. The fight has resulted in the closure of the production.

These things do not happen overnight. It appears that the trouble was brewing for a long but the top authorities just put a lid on the boiling pot. But a day came when the lid was off.

The matter has been reported to the local police. From your side, the authorities concerned may order domestic enquiry. The enquiry officer should investigate the incident and not work with the presumption on who should be blamed. Try to find the root cause and address it.

Thanks,

Dear Upendra Tiwari,

Layoffs and retrenchment are the delicate issues. It is a loss of livelihood to the workers affected. Therefore, these issues merit handling with due sensitivity. Just putting a finger on the rulebook and telling the workers that the management is right is insufficient. I feel that your management did not show empathy while laying off the workers. As a result, they have faced backlash from the workers. It has resulted in loss of production and above all loss of repute of the company.

As stated in my previous post, propose the management to conduct the domestic enquiry. While the local police may investigate the case, their investigation and the internal enquiry ordered by the company are the two independent things. Let us see whether your management learns a lesson or gives a short shrift!

Thanks,

Dinesh Divekar

Hi, As our HR fraternity rightly said, it did not blow overnight. The major failure is from the HR side, as they have not developed good rapport with the workmen on the shop floor. If they had every day frequent shop floor visits and meeting one to one would have not come to this stage.

Further, I would like to say that the contract workers are to be replaced immediately by the contractor, failing which, the concerned contractor's replacement is to be reviewed.
