Greetings to All, I am an Assistant Manager HR in the manufacturing sector PSU organization for 6 years with MBA HR and B.Tech qualification. Quite for some time, I feel that my career is reaching a stagnation where opportunities of learning, developing & of growth & promotion is very limited. So, I was looking for a career change. In a quest of so, many recruiters are reluctant to hire me just because I have experience in Govt. PSU sector. Why is it so and how do I overcome? Some recruiters are also advising me that I should stay in Govt. sector only and not try for the corporate sector. If anyone can advise me something encouraging so that I can have a diverse career profile.

The corporate sector may not hire people from PSU due to following factor-
1. The biggest hurdle is PSU culture where employees are not focused on results and targets
2. The work culture is not competitive.
3. Lack of Stretched target .
4. Time bound promotion and equal increment for performers/non performance.
It is advised you keep on trying corporate sector and always be positive.

It's a wrong perception that employees from Public Sector are not result oriented or not focused on goals etc. It is agreed that employees in PSUs have different work culture where they have more officialism than the Corporate Sector, but they are not in any way less competitive.
Further, it is true employees in PSUs have time bound promotion and there is no concept of out of turn promotion as compared to Corporate Sector where star performers are rewarded.
However, mindset needs to be changed that in view of the present scenario where employees do get adjusted quickly according to the given work environment and start performing as per the expectations they are engaged. Those who are averse to adopt changes prefer to stay permanently at one place....

Look for medium-sized companies ... dont look for MNCs when switching over. Settle with any company who accepts your skills and competencies. In many resumes (may be in yours too) people always write what are their responsibilities in the present and previous roles. Nobody care for your responsibilities but what you really achieved or contributed. Write only a few chief accomplishments which you could bring about based on your JD or job role. Also, mention a few lines about your soft skills... such as leadership, communication, team building with real-life examples or tangible or visible evidence or proof. Do not negotiate too much on salary. CTC in PSU with all fringe benefits could be more. If you want to come out of PSU, please do compromise slightly on CTC side because you need a foot-hold first. After two or three years, you can prove yourself and start looking for bigger better and higher roles in any leading companies.
