Hi,
Strange Practice. Perhaps in past some employees would be illiterate. Still is is compulsory to give the appointment letter, hence your copmany must have started the practice for taking thumb impression of employees as acknolwedgment as they woould have been unable to sign.
No such obligation...now a days even workmen also can read and sign.

Hi Driveme,
Are U under Bio-metric system for entry & exit ? Nothing wrong in having this in your records, may be helpful in case of litigations and ID problems if arises. Especially when the employee dies and there are disputes about the nominations on the file and surviving claimants of the deceased.
But no law requires both sign. and LTM as a prerequisite.

Hi,
Thumb impression gives an accurate identification of the person. In forensic science ,no two thumb impressions are ever alike. This is not a practice as per labour law in contract of employment. But as a matter of abundance caution employer takes thumb impression for fututure requirement of identification of employees. This is a good practice in contract of employment.
