I wanted to take the opinion of seniors about this new section that we intend to create. The infrastructure costs are on the rise and we need to figure out some new revenue generating avenues before we run dry.

The idea is to create this section called the "Industry insights & secrets" - this will be a private section where you only get access to all the material if you share some useful insights or some interesting industry secrets.

In case of Industry secrets the post is sent to us via an online form and no information about IP - just the username of the forum will be required to provide access to this private section.

The information which will be published by us will not contain the company name but just the sector they work in.

The "secret" posts made will be completely anonymous and will be posted by us and the information provider will have life time access to this private section.

Those who just want access without sharing any information can get access for a subscription fee. A special newsletter will be sent to all subscribers and members when new information is added.

All of the money collected will directly go into infrastructure and specialised content development which will again only be shared in this section exclusively.

Now the questions:
  1. Since I am not from the corporate world - I would like to know if there really are THAT many secrets and insights to make this section interesting enough.
  2. Do you think people will come forward to help create this section - would you?
  3. What is a good price for subscription to such an private are?
  4. What kind of content would you be interested in - interviews, special reports on the industry... anything else?

It would be great if members can chip in their ideas.

Dear Mr. Roy
The creation of Industry insights and Secrets forum is really useful and I welcome the idea of creation. Please accept my sincere appreciation for this innovative idea. I am in support of the creation of this forum.
A Nominal Fee as Annuity may be collected from the members and it can be utilised for developmental needs.
The access to the Industry insights and secrets must be given to all the subscribed members. But the company name and thread initiator name (including the username) must be moderated before publishing in the newsletter. Further the opinion and views can be further forwarded to the initiator of the thread, who can use it for the correction and development of his organisation.
The Moderators may be given with the task of correction of the message and spell check and the company name and user name change.
Let us expect the comments from other members also, so that it can get fine tune.

Hello Sid,
A good idea, per se.
But a few queries--more for clarity than anything else.
1] What's your definition of 'secrets'? This a very generic & all-encompassing word, so to say.
2] I am not sure on this--but do you think there COULD be situations when any company could invoke NDA & such instruments against the Thread initiator? Irrespective of whether the member's or company names are mentioned or not, it wouldn't be very difficult to get the 'implicit' meanings of the words used/not-used for those in the industry--in which case, what would be CiteHR's stand vis-a-vis the members posting such threads? In short, what are the chances of legal issues cropping-up & the action there-upon?
3] Reg the subscription fee, it MAY BE tough to put a figure on this aspect right now. One way to handle this aspect could be to use the model some online forums use--begin with the service being free of cost & make it a payable service as we move on. Depending on the response/usage, which would, in turn, depend on the type/quality of content being submitted to this section/service, I am sure a more accurate figure could then be arrived at--rather than to blindly fix any fee now.

@Bhaskar - Yes, the section would have two way access - either the person provides some relevant content for the section - or pay a subscription to have access. The one difference would be any content provided will gain the member life time access - the subscription would be monthly payable.

@Sateesh - By secrets I mean both industry tricks and tips and incidents or practices which are unknown. But by secrets I don't mean filth about crimes, bribes etc.

The legal issue will always exist - and it may be more worrying operating from India - had it been in the US there would've been at least some sense of the path of law. But of course in case of secrets it would finally be up to us to decide whether to publish it or not in the private area. As tips would be anonymous it would be difficult to corroborate any facts in the articles and we may become subject to implicit libel. In any case it would be up to us to publish it or not - and we may avoid publishing very sensitive material.

Another option is to just let it remain clean and only try to create premium content like interviews and industry reports - there can be various ways to source them - but of course the cost of procuring the material may be very high. And I do wonder if there are enough senior members who would be interested in such material. A decent report can cost quite a lot - that is if we can get rights to distribute it in a private section. So even if we put up some material every month - the cost can go up quite high.

The issue however is not just the cost - I am really confused about the inclinations of the senior management section. Most, probably don't have time to review lengthy material - so they need to be short and crisp. But the areas they may like to see covered is a mystery. What would be truly exciting content other than controversies or loud speculations?

Sid
