Author Stephen Covey, whose "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" sold more than 20 million copies, died Monday 16-07-2012. He was 79.

Let us remember some of his quotes as a matter of tribute to the great author of present times:

Quotes Of Stephen Covey:

Be a light,not a judge.Be a model,not a critic.

Live out of your imagination, not your history.

There are three constants in life...change, choice and principles.

The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.

While values drive behaviors, principles govern consequences.

Be sure that, as you scramble up the ladder of success, it is leaning against the right building.

Two people can see the same thing, disagree, and yet both be right. It's not logical; it's psychological.

Habit is the intersection of knowledge (what to do), skill (how to do), and desire (want to do).

Dependent people need others to get what they want. Independent people can get what they want through their own efforts. Interdependent people combine their own efforts with the efforts of others to achieve their greatest success.

Yet another quote of Stephen Covey:
'Begin with the end in mind is to begin today with the image, picture or paradigm of the end of your life as your fame of reference or the criterion on which everything else is examined.'

In the passing away of Stephen Covey, the world has lost a path breaker.

The world was drifting away and he showed that for achieving effectiveness one has to go back to basics.

He was different in a way, not bringing out something drastically new, but found out the forgotten right things, to be back on track.

Shri AVS has aptly brought out some famous quotes to mark the occasion and remember the great man's contribution.

Viewers would be fascinated to know that Stephen Covey had conducted

a massive study of illustrious personalities who made their mark at different times.

The study period covered a span of 200 years.

According to him in the first 150 years of study, all people who achieved greatness and attained popularity, were all governed by Character Ethics.

From the time of First World War onwards, there was a shift towards what Covey describes as Personality Ethics.

Character Ethics was based on time tested values like integrity, fidelity, humility, courage, patience, simplicity, Golden Rule etc.

He maintains that True Success and Happiness are rewards of Character Ethics.

Personality Ethics was more about outward projection with flawed character in the inside.

Covey states that Personality Ethics rests on traits of duplicity, lip service , communication mastery etc.

Stephen Covey goes on to build further on Character Ethics – the time honoured Principles.

The concept and need for paradigm shift, the stages from ‘Dependence’ to ‘Independence’ and then to ‘Interdependence.’

Besides the Seven Habits, his 90 - 10 principle and Emotional Bank Account are worth revisiting a number of times.

It is time to salute Stephen Covey - the man who created footprints on water.

May his soul rest in Peace.

Hi AVS,

In fact almost all his works are researched work only. He made a thorough study of his subjects and presented it cogently. But the most successful one was his "7 Habits of ..." which really adds to our knowledge and understanding. However, all his wisdom was there from time immemorial but was told in refreshingly novel way.

I agree with Mr. Raghunath when he says, "Character Ethics was based on time tested values like integrity, fidelity, humility, courage, patience, simplicity, Golden Rule etc. He maintains that True Success and Happiness are rewards of Character Ethics. Personality Ethics was more about outward projection with flawed character in the inside. Covey states that Personality Ethics rests on traits of duplicity, lip service , communication mastery etc."

All these leads to our own wisdom and Covey's findings agrees totally with our ancient wisdom. Indians thinking, lifestyle and philosophy are dependent on "what is true ultimately?". Thus, it is far sighted.

But now people are falling prey to transient and temporary, fleeting things, attractions, etc. And when I see all these I am reminded of T.S.Eliot's poem where he says, "We are hallowed men, stuffed men leaning together" We have become parasites with no stuff inside us. I pray, "God help our country" as the American President elect tells when he takes the oath of Office!!

Shri MJS and Shri AVS have brought out some lively observations.
Readers may like to see what great men have to say in these modern times.
Try not to become a man of success but try to become a man of ValueEinstein

Hi Raghunathn,

Years ago when I was in school I used to read regularly the English "Chandamama"a monthly magazine. I remember a story. When Adi Shankara was sitting under a tree and was writing a bhasya (Commentary) on a masterpiece, a Sheppard came to him and told Shakara, "Guru, people come to you from all walks of life, they prostrate to you and get good advice from you. I don't know why they come to you. What special quality you have in you? Can I show my special skill? After seeing tell me whether you have such a skill? and then tell me who is great either you or me"? Saying this the Sheppard immediately began to fly in air and made several rounds in the air and came down. He challenges Adi Shnkara, "Can you fly like me in the air?" "Am I not great than you?" Shankara simply laughs and asks him, " I really admire your special skill. certainly I do not have this skill you possess. But please tell me of what use this special skill to you or to the society?" If you use your skill for betterment of the society people will respect you and they will come to you; otherwise the will not!!" Such a skill is a waste.

A powerful message of yours is hidden in this small story. One need not be successful in life, but certainly one should be useful to the society. Only then posterity will remember you. You make others life happy, people will remember you for ever. Be like a candle, burning yourself and in the process giving light to others. This is the essence of real HRM. The HR man should motivate, inspire and do good to others to come up in life.Try to help build people for future so that these leaders will help build a better and healthy society.

Ramesh Krishnan built Leander Paces, Prakash Padukone ( father of Hindi movie actress Deepika Padukone) build Pullela Gopichand who in turn build Saina Nehwal who all have made our country proud.

These people are real leaders. Hats off to them for they have built people who have made our country proud. K.Balachander the Tamil Film Moive Director is another who has introduced nearly 65 artistes so far. Among them are Kamal Hasan, Rajanikanth, Madhavi, Saritha, Nagesh, Prakash Raj, etc These people use their skill and talent to bring up many people who in turn carry on their tradition further.

Mr.MJS
You have very succinctly explained the character and purpose of a true leader through some examples which are live before us and as AVS said, will be a guide to HR practitioners on building leadership. Thanks to both of you.
