Dear All,
My name is Amin and now, I am working as technical scaffold engineering. Any one know how to calculate the load on scaffold? and the permitted maximum high of the scaffold.
Thanks

Dear Amin,
Warm welcome to our Citehr EHS forum. Earlier we discussed against scaffold calculation u can get scaffolding related data’s from earlier thread (please go by below mentioned link) but we are not get final soluction.Anyhow I hope you get soluction.Keep on participate share & gain your knowledge from our forum. . .

Dear friend
all scaffolding height is determined by using height to base ratio that is 4:1 .this means height can up to 4 times the minimal base width .
For example a scaffolding having minimal base width of 2 metere its height can have up to 8 metre
regarding load
there are three types of scaffolding
1 light duty which can have up to 120kg/squrem
2 medium duty which can have up to 240kg/squrem
3 heavy or special duty above 240kg/squrem

And one more thing regarding height is due to wind factor
height of tower scaffolding out side the building height to base ratio is 3.5 :1
mobile scaffolding due to wind factor height out side building is 3:1
this diffrence is to protect the scaffolding from heavy wind

Dear Friends
THE LAW REQUIRES THAT NO SCAFFOLD SHALL BE ERECTED, MOVED, DISMANTLED OR ALTERED EXCEPT UNDER THE DIRECT SUPERVISION OF A COMPETENT PERSON.
Scaffolding is a specialization.
There are more than 30 different types of scaffolds. Scaffold can be supported, under-hung , hanging or bracket supported.
Materials used are bamboo, aluminium, fiberglass and steel.
Common scaffold are tube and coupler, system and welded frame. Welded frame scaffold are only for light duty.
OSHA standards which are widely adopted give the load capacities which are already given by hseofficerjsk.
Details on ground preparation, sole boards, base plates, Post spacing, bracing requirements, guard rails and toe boards are all given in the standards for light duty and medium duty scaffolds.
With prescribed post spacing the scaffold height in this case can be up to 125 feet.
Only for independent, tower and mobile scaffolds the 1:4 (1 base width to 4 height) ratio is applicable. You can increase the height of scaffolds by using suitable ties, gay wires and rakers. However this is applicable for scaffold up to a height of 40 feet. Beyond this height the scaffold should be designed by a structural engineer.
Heavy duty scaffold should only be designed by a structural engineer. There can be dead load and live load on scaffold. Though the construction method is same, post spacing and bracing will differ depending up on loads.
Weight of all the scaffold components plus the intended load will have to be considered in assessing the load on a scaffold. A factor of safety of 4 is required for any scaffold.

Although bamboo is accepted, many organisations have banned use of bamboo. In our company we make steel pipes with couplers compulsory for scaffolds. Thanks and Regards, Sudhir

It is advisable to refer the recommendations of scaffold manufacturers for the design load.
