I am currently working in HR department of a mid sized garment manufacturing company. Few days ago for a transport related issue one of senior staffs advised me not to do any personal help (to other colleagues) while in the office premises unless it is required. Just only think of own performance and promotion. And do work based on that. Also said that he learnt this lesson throughout his career and continuing.
He is now currently working as a CFO of the company (his employment duration almost 10 years in this company & total 15 + years of experience).
I really can't understand what did he mean by his advise? And how a senior staffs like his position can talk this with a junior colleague like me within office premises?
Is this good or bad or what?

Advice is cynical.
Help people in any way possible in personal capacity and that makes you a better person.
In work be professional and follow all rules/laws etc.
But do not spend time during working hours discussing personal problems and things like that which can detract from work and affect your professionalism.
In no way otherwise should you change your basic helpful nature.

Dear Asif,
Your senior has advised you:
"not to do any personal help (to other colleagues) while in the office premises unless it is required".
When he gave this advice, you could have sought clarification immediately. Unless we understand his mind, it would not be fair to judge his advice.
He is holding posit ion of CFO. Undoubtedly, he must have been the victim of the bad experiences in his past career.
You may go back to him and seek clarification now also.
Thanks,

My take--
To help or not to help colleagues is a personal choice. It must be remembered that we all need help at work from others.
I have tried to help others when asked or even when not asked and I sensed that the person needs assistance. New colleagues need help and guidance.I still remember and thank others who helped me.
It is also a way to bond and creates a conducive working environment.

Dear Dinesh Sir, Thanks for your valuable reply.
I have a question that if I have a bad experience of any of my past career time, how can it be an excuse to not to do the thing which is within my context?
