You can display the picture of the employee in the bulletin board stating his achievement and tag it as Best Employee Of The Year or Month.
You can give him award on a get together meet or some company function is front of everyone that gives him enough satisfaction and recognization

Perhaps you can categorize awards such as performance-based rewards, longevity/loyalty awards, etc.
Company culture affects also the kind of rewards/awards provided by the company so you might want to consider this also.
As to the kind of award, it also depends on budget but you can vary rewards to monetary/non-monetary kind. Nisha's suggestion is a good way of giving recognition to employee without hurting company budget too much.
