I am an engineer (B.E., MBA) working for the government of India. I feel I am not utilizing my knowledge and skills to the maximum, and the pay is also very small compared to my colleagues working in the private sector and those who are self-employed.

I want to become rich within two years by working hard and intelligently. Please suggest some good ideas, including new projects and self-employment opportunities.

Dear rbs2002,

We need to understand that there are no shortcuts to hard work. Secondly, we do not work for any company for a job; we work there to build our career. Now, rbs, unless you switch your job from the government sector to the private sector, I doubt there are any chances of becoming rich unless it's done illegally. First of all, government jobs are places where people normally work with a typical mindset, and they are afraid of changes. So, even if the change is proposed, the change is nearly impossible.

So what I personally would suggest is to join a company where you find your job description more challenging and where you think your creativity will come into play more often. I hope this might help us to sort out the real dilemma.

Dear rbs2002,

This is what I see in your statement: BE (Mech) - strong education -> Good job (your dream) -> Pays well (need should be satisfied) -> Self-esteem (Friends will also look up to you) -> You want to be busy always, and doing things innovatively (that's what you meant by hard work and intelligence?)

I suggest a different path: BE (mech) - strong education -> Proper job market analysis (career plan) -> Choose a passionate job (Being busy and doing things out of your own creativity) -> Others realize your value (Wow...this guy has got talent).

And see the following things that will come automatically: Money, Fame, :-) Sense of satisfaction.

What I meant to say is - hunt for a job that you will be passionate about, create a niche for yourself. That is, no one else would be as specialized as you in that particular area. And finally, you get all that you want!

Like Sam Dave commented: we do not work for any company for a job; we work there to build our career. So, create opportunities by yourself, searching for some changes and unfulfilled demands around your surroundings, and be the owner of yourself (be an entrepreneur). But this will take more than 2 years to become a wealthy individual. Once you make the right choice, you will.

In my opinion, you don't become rich unless you are honest and passionate about whatever service you are providing to society. Well, dishonesty can get you a quick buck, but it doesn't last long, and you are never truly rich because of the state of your mind.

What you need to do is find what you are passionate about and be entrepreneurial about it. The day you wake up and think, "I don't have a job... but I have work to do," that is a sign that you are progressing in the right direction.

Becoming rich is relative. Richness is a relative term. You have to define first what is rich according to you. Being a crorepati or lakhpati, or being a landlord, owning a farmhouse, or becoming a member of a millionaire club, etc. Having a good family is also rich. It totally depends on you. Ask yourself, what is rich according to you? Then make several plans or the most convenient plan according to you. Implement and work on it fast and with strict discipline. You will soon see if it is working or not. Then improvise on it, and I hope and feel that you will have your answer. Please acknowledge.

Hello rbs2002,

Most have already conveyed what it takes to become 'rich', most notably Zalak & Asha. I want to go one step further... WHAT DO YOU EXACTLY MEAN BY 'RICH'? Earning 10 lacs p.a., 1 cr p.a. salary, 10 crs p.a., 1000 crs p.a., or something else entirely? First, BE CLEAR ON YOUR DEFINITION OF "BEING RICH" [I have met people for whom 'rich' doesn't even mean money - even though it sounds ridiculous], and then choose the path that will take you there AND strive to achieve it, come hell or high water. Just remember one thing: "there's no shortcut to success" - perseverance and effort are a must. For some, it may take less time, for some a bit longer, and for others, more time. That's all... as long as you don't lose focus on your goal, you are sure to reach where you want to.

I could go on and on... but I guess this should suffice.

TS

Hi, you could try the following:

- Get in touch with a career counselor.
- See what jobs your friends are doing and try to identify whether you like any of them.
- In the meanwhile, since you are well-educated, see if you can give guest lectures, etc., in some institutions. This will supplement your income.

Dear RBS,

It's been said that "Wakt se pahle aur kismat se jyada kuch nahi milta," but you have to always put in lots of effort in your work, whatever you are doing. Success and money will then automatically come behind you.

As you are working in the government sector, you will not get ample opportunities because of its stringent structure. The best thing about government organizations is the job security.

From your post, I can see that you are a BE, MBA graduate. With this qualification, you can find many good opportunities in the market. If you put in the effort, you will definitely find good opportunities, both work-wise and financially.

What you can do now is start looking for a good job and simultaneously strengthen your profile by learning various things. Consider doing some certifications or courses related to your field. If you are in the IT field, you can also try joining the open-source community.

I think this would help you.

Dear rbs2002,

I do not know the period of your services in the government of India; however, irrespective of your length of service, considering your qualifications, you must be holding a good post, and your total emoluments must not be less than Rs 40,000/- per month if your services are between 5 to 7 years. It is a secure service. In a private company, you may get a higher salary, but there is no security.

How do you feel that you are not utilizing your knowledge and skill to the maximum? If you utilize your knowledge and skills in the present services, you are likely to be promoted to a very high post before your retirement, and by that time, you will be getting not less than Rs. 200,000/- per month. After retirement, you will get a pension almost equivalent to 40% of your last drawn salary.

There are people who have switched over to a private company but failed to get what they wanted. In case you have your own family business or factory, then you take such a risk to change over.

Best of luck and regards.

I think you have a very good knowledge about your subject, and based on that, you need to come up with new projects that can be helpful, patented, and sold to big companies. Like this, you can earn some money quickly. If things work out, you can start your own company and provide opportunities for youngsters to work in your company.

Hi, the most important thing is how much money do you want. "Rich" has different connotations for different people. Working for others is the way to make others rich and fulfill their dreams, not yours. Start your own business, use your free time to build it. If you have the guts to achieve your goal, glory will follow you. The best is to start a free enterprise. All the best!

Dear RBS,

Opportunities are never given. Opportunities need to be created. You need to think about what new you can do. Once you have this attitude towards work, things are going to be different. As regards pay, I do not agree that the Government of India now pays less. The Government of India, by awarding the sixth pay commission to its employees, has crossed all limits in the recession era being faced by the economy. All companies are cutting salaries of employees, but for obvious reasons, the Government awarded the sixth pay commission to its employees. It is true that the Government expects its employees to do what they are asked to do, but you as an engineer should have an attitude to look for new ideas and suggest to superiors with reasons/justifications for their implementation. With a good attitude, all jobs are good.

Best of luck,

Dear all HR professionals are rich. They are with management and employees. We know the state of facts, and we are the humans who suggest with proper inputs and with the intention of providing more. I feel we are right thinkers. Such an attitude will take us to reach good levels, and we must perform and be happy with all levels of the ladder to reach. More than all, we need to learn a lot all these times too. If we prove to be a good seed, then management themselves plant us. We grow in the shape of a tree to give a shadow to n numbers...

So please try to put the first thing first and be satisfied with all that we have today. Few do not have anything; we are better than them.

Dear All,

I have gone through the answers of all of you. Everyone is right, but what he is looking for is the way to become rich. His goal is very clear - to become RICH but legally because he knows becoming rich illegally is very easy, which means a person is honest. Not a single person gave him a specific answer. Please do not give a very specific answer like starting an ABC business and you will become rich. It can only be identified by Mr. RBS. You have to give some examples and be specific while answering. I have seen people getting diverted from the topic and started teaching him. Everyone forgot the topic - how a person can become RICH legally. Please reply to him but stick to the topic only.

Would that not be a question everyone would like to have an answer to? No one becomes rich in a specified time period; it happens over a period of hard work, smart work, and proper planning. RBS - one thing I can suggest is: there is only one thing that always keeps increasing in this world: Population! So why not do something that would attract the masses?

Also, please note that people on your success list only came into the limelight when they became successful. Do you have any idea about their past? What turmoil did they go through? Have you seen the movie "Guru"?

If you have some amount, then try to start a business of your choice from scratch while maintaining your government job. Concentrate fully on your business. When it grows, consider investing more funds (from friends, your company, a bank, family, etc.) and move forward. When you observe growth, make the decision to leave your job and focus on managing your business. I am also interested in following this formula.

1. Honesty and wealth do not typically go together in a strict sense.

2. It is surprising how one can consider joining a public or government company when they greatly admire wealthy individuals.

3. If you strictly want to be both rich and honest, you could play the lottery or visit a casino.

4. If you aim to be wealthy with reasonable honesty, you could pursue running your own business as a stockbroker, owning a bar, pub, hotel, restaurant, or massage parlor.

5. Another option is to remain in a government company and utilize your spare time for various online money-making opportunities available.
