We have a small fabrication facility in Palghar near Mumbai where we employ casual workers. Now we intend to absorb some of the workers onto our payroll. I am thinking of taking them on as trainees (e.g., Trainee Welder, Trainee Fitter, etc.). Now, while deciding their wages, do I have to follow the minimum wage rate? Can you tell me what the minimum wage rate is currently prevalent in Maharashtra for semi-skilled/skilled workers?

Thanks for your help.

Dear Harshad,

Your query shows that you were not running your unit according to the labor laws. Currently, you also wish to absorb some of your casual employees. It appears that you are not aware of your State's minimum wages. Furthermore, it is clarified that if you intend to appoint the casual workers as trainees, then you are required to provide them with minimum wages as fixed for unskilled workers during the training period. Afterward, you are to appoint them in the worker category for which you will provide training. For Maharashtra State minimum wages, you may visit the site paycheck.in or contact your local labor office.

I hope that moving forward, you will pay proper attention to the enforcement of various labor laws.

Dear Mr. Khola/Praveen,

Thank you for your responses. I will surely ensure enforcement of the laws immediately. Also, Praveen, your point is noted.

Now on paycheck.in, the minimum wages are divided into Zones. How are these zones defined? I could not find any details of the zones on the website. Can you please help?
