Hi,

Three issues come to my mind. First, unfortunately, this is the time when companies cut down on training. Actually, this would be the best time to train your personnel, especially the sales force. If the training is internal, the better as no further cost is involved. This training would ensure better sales force capabilities and therefore, in return, better sales (if the training is effective) and therefore a way out of the bad times.

Second, this is the time when HR has to be more humane than before. If a person has to be given the pink slip, let it be done in a humane manner so that when this recession is over, the same person feels like coming back. Alternatively, give sabbaticals to people who are not required but keep them in your rolls without pay, especially for executives.

Third, use this time to rejig your HR plans for the future so that when the upswing starts, you are not found in the wrong place.

Hi Viren,

I've attached here an article from The Human Factor in which the Chairman of Bisleri talks about the role of HR leaders, especially in times of recession. I hope this is useful.
