Hi All,

There is one PPT I'm attaching here, which was developed by some of my students and me. I teach them OB, and after completing each chapter, I ask them to make a presentation on any topic from that chapter. At the end of the course, they gifted me this PPT and said, "This is what we have learned from you."

Please read and post your comments.

Cheers,

Hi,

It's disheartening that 23 people downloaded this PowerPoint presentation, yet not a single comment has been posted by any of you. I have requested many times that when you use or share something, please express gratitude to the person who created it. It's unfortunate that such a good presentation has received no appreciation. I hope some of you will take a moment to write a few words acknowledging my student's contribution.

Hi,

Good effort. For future reference, there is a saying, "Once you share it, it ceases to be yours." Therefore, it is better we learn to give and expect nothing. I know it is difficult but saves a lot of mental peace for ourselves. Hope you don't mind me saying this.

Hi Kusum,

I agree with what you say, but it really makes a difference if someone shows gratitude. I do not post these presentations and articles to accumulate points; it is basically to share my knowledge. Therefore, I would appreciate it if everybody gives their opinion not just on my posts but on everybody else's as well. There is a concerning practice happening on this forum where people are being spoon-fed, which is wrong. What do you think?

Hi Archana,

I agree with what you say too. I was just helping in just jumping a realm. I have also encountered such disappointments early in my career. The best way I tackled was the policy of just 'doing'. Expectations kill creativity. Just think of Mother Teresa, and all those like her, it was 'doing' for them and nothing else. My dear, it is really jumping a realm, which people like you and I have to learn. Once the awareness comes, it is easy to tackle. Take care. This reply was not a reaction only clarification or direction.

Warm regards,
DK

Hi Archnahr,

I have just read this thread after being away from citehr for a while, and I must say I totally agree with your comments. I have found myself posting infrequently now, as my posts appear to be ignored most of the time. Initially, I felt disrespected as a member; however, I have had several private messages where I have developed a friendship and gladly shared whatever help/assistance I can provide based on my experience. That's not a points grabber but a sincere mindset.

I don't post for points but rather to see if a different perspective might help with the creative juices for someone else, to cause reflection, challenge, or educate, depending on my available time. I will only respond if I feel I have something that may be of value to say.

Reading the thread, I smiled at some of the comments. Knowledge is power, but a truly great leader gives away their knowledge to share the power and help others develop into great leaders through experience. I am perhaps not sure, though, where one draws the line at what is reality on citehr. What I see is a number of people requesting information from members to save themselves from doing the research on their own. This is also how I interpret your comments on "spoon-feeding."

Thank you for permitting my view as well.

Cheers,

Hi JO,

Thanks a lot for your post. I really feel bad, not because many of them do not reply, but because we put in lots of efforts to reply to them or collect good material and post it. Anyway, I'm learning from these experiences. But I really felt good once I read yours and Kusum's mail on this. At least my reactions or someone's attention. 😊

Have a great weekend.

Good efforts were made by your student. However, it can be improved further, for example, the bullet points should be more elaborative. The flow of the PowerPoint presentation and pauses are required for each topic.

Hi Archana,

About the presentation, who are the students? (grade) If it is some senior grade, then it is not a presentation but documentation (just have made a presentation for the sake of it).

About your observation about your articles not having a comment? Well, I would like to say that it is for comments that you post thought-provoking articles and learning materials. Those who think they can fudge and go to the top are highly mistaken (bullshit can take you to the top but not for long). One has to prove his/her mettle. Do you think that they can get away with copying every time? Knowledge sharing is the best thing one can do. You are not losing anything but helping others to gain something (be it copying).

These are my views and not directed to you. Please do not take it personally.

Hi Vrishi,

The students are of BBA first year. So, gradually, they will learn how to make PPTs, and even the subject knowledge will be increased. Don't you agree??

No, I don't post my articles for comments, but I think anyone would be happy to receive some critics or comments. Don't you want to have feedback on anything you do??

Feedback is the one link that makes the process of communication complete. :D

Regarding copying, what you have written is clearly mentioned in the Posting Guidelines by Sid (CHR). If anybody copies any material, it is copyright infringement.

I would request you not to use language that can hurt somebody's feelings. Showing such aggressive remarks may cause further arguments.

I may not take it personally as mentioned by you, as I have grown past all these things, but others can.

Thanks for your valuable inputs.

Hello all,

I have been out of the country for a bit and am just now getting caught up with my interest threads.

I have finally decided to express myself on the issue of feedback. At the risk of offending many of my colleagues here, I wish my comments to be accepted in the spirit they are given, to affect improvement.

Please, please, please... when someone asks you for feedback, it is because they want your feedback!

Saying the presentation was good or boring or whatever tells the person absolutely nothing. We need to give specifics.

1. What was good, why, what was the impact on you personally.
2. What was boring, why, what suggestions might we make to improve?

The receiver should feel totally okay with questioning to clarify points brought out by the feedback.

Feedback is sought for validation that the presentation served its purpose and that key messages were received.

We use this same process within the coaching process. If we are serious about helping each other to grow, develop, and learn new skills, we need to improve our feedback techniques or not bother.

I would never accept the words written here from or for any of my students. They have no value in the feedback process and for me, show a disrespect for the effort made.

Regrets,

JEV

Hi JEV,

Thanks a lot for the comments you made here in the post. I agree with you on certain points that feedback should be given in a proper manner. Just saying good and bad does not solve the purpose. :) But I disagree with you on the statement that I would not accept any of the words given for my students. I'm happy that people read the ppt and gave their comments on that. I accept it wholeheartedly.

Secondly, I have not received any feedback from you, although you are not acting the way you are suggesting. I may sound straightforward, but it is true that we all give suggestions but do not implement them ourselves.

Hi Archna

This is a recreation of feedback I had previously provided on citehr for your students but that you appear not to have received. I think we can agree to disagree on accepting feedback.

My view is that all feedback is positive when it provides the detail that will help us affect improvement. The disadvantage perhaps with this forum is the immediate opportunity to clarify issues brought forth in the feedback process. I stand by my comments on value of feedback where no details or effects are documented. I see no value in that it doesn’t add to the learning or improvement of the end result. That is one of the key purposes of feedback.

1.Initially the strong colors attracted my attention but as I moved forward I became confused as to what the key learning points were. For me a softer background with emphasis in color would have driven the key points home. Maximum 3 colors

2.Font use: the mix of fonts, script, underling and not were a source of irritation for me. I found myself missing the key points while I counted the variety on each slide.

3.Animation: Again missed key learning as I was left with the impression the originator was trying to use every possible animation technique to prove they knew how. Found myself second-guessing what would come next.

I am not a student of MP but I am a corporate trainer on effective use of PP presentations. I am not sure my feedback will be of value to your students as my comments are specific to the PP as opposed to content, which I think was your intent.

Questions I would ask….

1.Who is this presentation intended for?

2.Is this presentation speaking slides?

3.What is the key message meant to be delivered? I missed it!

4.How many people would be attending the presentation? Script is very difficult to read depending on group size, room size lighting etc.

5.Will participants be using a guide?

6.How will notes be taken, questions handled etc.?

7.Normally a title page, welcome, closing etc would be included? Again who is the audience?

8. Time allocated for the presentation?

I applaud the effort of your students. The learning and growing as their experience is gained is so exciting. Please accept these comments in the spirit in which they are given, to help affect improvement.

He/she who dares to teach must never cease to learn! Thank you for the opportunity of providing feedback and expressing my views.

Cheers

Hey JEV,

Thanks a lot for your wonderful feedback. I completely agree with you on the value of adding something while giving feedback, which is still lacking in this forum. I hope you did not feel offended by my mail, as it was intentionally to tell you that we all may feel offended by criticism. But I'm delighted to receive an email from you with so many points. Thanks a lot once again.

The students who made this PowerPoint graduated this year, and it was the final presentation they made in the last semester of their college. Although most of the changes you suggested are being taken care of and surely the content part as well. There were many people who did not contribute on the thread but sent me their opinions through personal messages, which was a great gesture. 😃 This was the reason I wrote, I am satisfied with even good or bad. The presentation was meant for me; it was an assignment given to them.

Thanks again and looking forward to more interaction with you. 😃 Cheers!! Archna

Absolutely no offense taken. While I read many threads on citehr, I don't often comment unless I feel I can add value based on my area of expertise. I must admit, though, there have been times when I didn't really feel my comments were welcomed, and I have backed off contributing.

Glad you saw some value in my input, even though it was too late for your students. Where do you teach? Part of our 06/07 business plan is to build collaborative relationships to deliver our training services in India. One never knows when our paths may cross!

Hi,

The topic has been useful to understand the style and behavior to be learned and adopted. I would request more of these resources to help people understand themselves as this type of learning is going to happen when one passes the age of 35.

Guys and gals, life is short-lived. We tend to feel that we should enjoy life doing everything, but I would like you all to remember that when you reach the prime of your life, you'll only feel that you've wasted your life doing unnecessary, or rather, least-prioritized things, instead of understanding yourself and others. Ultimately, understanding behavior leads to better relationships.

Archana, keep up the good work, and do let me know if you need any help regarding the same.

It was nice to see your posting on feedback. I agree with your observations and would like to add my experience in citehr a few months back.

One girl was asking for feedback on a presentation she had uploaded. I gave my honest feedback. She expressed her gratitude and asked for further feedback. I started with a positive note but gave honest feedback again. She was upset but said thanks. She again asked for feedback without making any changes in the content.

I gave feedback. She said I don't encourage people and I always discourage, made some more harsh observations!!! I stopped giving feedback unless asked in private mails.

However, I think to make it even better than before, maybe you can try to re-select the font sizes, types, arrangements, and so on. Basically, I find it a waste, as such an informative PowerPoint is not being presented beautifully and easily understandable for viewers. Interesting comments from our friends. I am new to CiteHR and find it a mixed bag of 'Professional' posts and some good 'Time-Pass' stuff. Comments thereon are often reflective of members' personalities/sentiments. No harm done.

But personally, I would prefer more professional postings (both original and comments) on a site like this. It can be developed into a really productive, useful, and rewarding forum, on the lines of LinkedIn etc.

Archana, being an OB teacher, you should know that people are different and have differing perceptions. That does not mean that you should get disappointed by their comments on your PowerPoint presentation. Honestly speaking, the title "Comprehensive OB" raises expectations, and if the PPTs do not meet those expectations, you are likely to receive negative comments. However, that should not deter your zeal for doing something different, and I appreciate your divergent approach to the subject. Keep working on it, and if possible, keep me updated with any enhancements to your PPTs. I wish you all the best. 🌟

Dear Archna,

I have just had the privilege to read the PowerPoint presentation by your students, and I must say I was amazed by what they came up with. I attended my first lesson yesterday in OB and I appreciate it. After a few lessons, I promise to share some information with you which you can pass on to your students as well.

Thanks,
Pauline

Hello,

My name is Ruchi Saxena. I have completed MHRM (Master of Human Resource Management), and I am now planning to pursue a Ph.D. in HRM. I would greatly appreciate your help in suggesting a topic and assisting me in creating a synopsis. This is quite urgent, so I am eagerly awaiting your response.

Thank you.

All of you are correct. This site has been conceived to share all knowledge, which then grows. But how does it grow? Sharing of views, ideas, creativity, suggestions, etc., which are derived from one's experience. Though it is never mandatory to comment on anything posted, it would also be appreciable as feedback is an essential part of any kind of communication.

I am a non-HR professional trying to get an overview of OB. The varied approaches in tackling this subject never cease to amaze me. I wish I knew the coherent sequence in which this is to be approached - what are the relative importances and sequence of perception, attitude, value, ethics, personality, job satisfaction, job fit, appraisals, and rewards, etc. Regarding this presentation, in particular, the effects overshadow the message; sometimes less is more.

Dear Archana,

I appreciate the effort taken by your students in preparing these presentations, considering the fact that expectations as teaching faculty and reality do not match. I am of the opinion that there is room for improvement.

Wishing them all the best.

As a student, what I think about organizational behavior is that it mainly doesn't depend on one thing of a human being. It includes different natures, attitudes, aspirations, and confidence. It requires a lot of effort from a person because, as a HR manager in a company, we must have the knowledge of how to utilize our human resources in the best possible way.

We can share our views here because every time bookish knowledge doesn't work. Sometimes some problems arise in a company where you have to apply your mind and find out the solution. I think OB is a subject that everyone should read in general because it is not only the responsibility of an HR manager to look after the human resources in an organization, but the workers working there must also be responsible for the effective functioning of their organization. At the same time, it will be a detriment to a company if its employees don't cooperate.

So, as an MBA student or a student of any stream or specialization, they must study OB as a subject because ultimately, they all have to be associated with an organization and they must know how to behave in that environment. I wish all the persons on this site all the best to create this kind of platform where we can share our views and knowledge.

Hi Archana,

Have you made any more presentations such? I'm really keen on these theories you have made. Did you do any work towards a curriculum-oriented OB, meaning specifically OB in business/management? Glad to know about someone like you.

Warm regards.

Hi Archana,

I got your PowerPoint downloaded just now and could see the agony you were experiencing for not getting a response. I agree with Kusum, and that is the way life is. The absence of a response should not dissuade you from what you are doing because we do things we want to do, and we should love what we want to do. In any case, we see these days that more and more people are becoming indifferent, a very disturbing tendency though. But believe, there are still people out there like Kusum, which is more than enough to support what we are doing. Don't lose hope and interest in what you are doing. All the best for your future endeavors.

Hi Miss,

It's a very impressive presentation. As your students put in their efforts, many things are there that can't be analyzed by reading alone. I am feeling so happy in my heart that you taught your students as if you are their guru, not just a professional teacher. I need your small help, if you can, please let me know for study purposes only.

I am an architect doing a PG in Construction Management. My thesis is about Design Management and its implications on Construction Management. My guide has told me that the basis of my subject is Organizational Behavior (OB). It's the first time I am exposed to the tenets of OB so I cannot comment. I need to ruminate... but it's a start and I am thankful.

Hello Archana,

I can't say much about the presentation as I have just downloaded it. However, after reading all the threads between you, Kusum, and JEV, I fully agree with your points:

1. You should be giving, not expecting.
2. For improvement, you need feedback; that's the basic food for growth.
3. The feedback should be specific so that the other person can understand what to include and what to remove.

For the time being, please accept my thanks for providing us with such a beautiful conclusion that "providing feedback doesn't take anything from you, but it can give something to the receiver." Yes, it may make you think on the topic, which only increases understanding.

Thanks a lot.

Sometimes we do not value things as we should, until we lose them. As long as you feel what you are doing is right and can help others, this can be seen by how many people download your presentation. Please do not be disappointed for not receiving the gratitude you deserve. Consider the number of downloads as a measure of the gratitude and assistance you are providing to people.

Remember, "Your material would not be downloaded if it was not interesting and useful for us."

All the best, Pjuan

Hello Archana,

This response is after seven years! I wouldn't know if the feedback would be of any use to you now. Still, I would like to say that it is a well-made presentation to introduce the concept to others who have a different background.
