Hi folks, I need your help in making a PowerPoint presentation on Work from Home (WFH) as the future norm in India. The presentation should cover the following points:

1. Statistics by industry on the adoption of WFH as the future norm.
2. Advantages and disadvantages of WFH.
3. Challenges and strategies to overcome them.
4. Methods to ensure that productivity does not decrease.

Thank you for your assistance.

I am in the field of higher education in technical fields. My response is as follows.

1. WFH is a compulsion, it is not an option. It has been necessitated by the circumstances, and unless you are able to adapt, it will become difficult to survive. In my establishment of nearly 100 employees, all are working from home. (100%)

2. Apart from cost, space utilization, family time, work-life balance, quality of work life, the advantage I am able to see is the realization of the importance of human relationships, particularly in families. When one is forced to spend more than a month confined to the four corners of limited space, the realization of family relations, be it between spouses, between parents & children, between siblings or with the grandparents, has definitely led to more understanding and appreciation of each other.

As regards disadvantages, there is a need to relate to a wider world that is being missed, a lot of misapprehension as fake news grips our lives. There is a lurking fear that something worse is going to happen.

3. It is only the computer-savvy generation that has been able to adapt themselves to the needs of the time. Others have not been able to cope with the sudden unexpected crisis.

4. In these times, managements have to think out of the box to devise new ways and means to keep productivity up. There are no standard measures or textbook solutions to this crisis. All industries need to reinvent themselves.

Dear friend,

Many a times certain words sound good to hear but in reality it is harsh. Would you answer me one question, why now all industries and business houses are worried about the exodus of workmen from their place of work to their homes, when 'Work from Home' remains a viable solution?

We are in the field of construction work involving roads, factories, railways, dams, and many other projects. Can tasks such as concreting, excavating, compacting, testing, dozing, curing, and many more activities, where a number of engineers are engaged at project sites for supervision, suggestions, and monitoring of work progress, be done remotely without physical presence?

While WFH is a compulsory option for limited activities, it may not be suitable for all tasks. If WFH is indeed an option, then why are all medical staff in hospitals not operating from home to avoid putting their lives in danger?

The option of WFH is limited to certain activities and to a certain extent only. For instance, we have paid salaries to our 75,000 staff for the months of March and April, and tasks such as preparing bills and making payments to different vendors/contractors were carried out by 'Operating from Home' by less than 1% of the staff. Meanwhile, all our project activities remained nonfunctional, and 99% of our total staff were either idle at home or stranded at different project sites, not generating any revenue for the company.

I hope this illustration helps you better understand the situation.

Thank you.
