Hello Raghvendra,

You must have heard of global warming. The eco balance has been under serious threat by industrial pollutants and carbon emissions from automobiles and many other comfort creatures which man has created for himself. It has been universally recognized now that citizens, from individuals to corporations, all have the responsibility to do their bit to protect and sustain the environment. Corporates have assumed it as their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to implement initiatives to sustain and improve the environment. In order to improve their image in CSR, which enhances their brand in society and the market, corporates subject themselves to evaluating their performance not only in financial terms but also in terms of their CSR. What better tool can there be than HRM for corporates to implement green initiatives to develop and inculcate a green sense of responsibility? Therefore, the HRM initiatives/practices/policies that aim to drive the green sense of responsibility can collectively be called green HRM.

Some examples of green HRM practices/initiatives are:

1) Discouraging the use of paper in filing and office work by making use of technology like adopting digital filing.

2) Pooling cars for transporting executives to minimize fuel consumption and carbon emissions or even encouraging cycling among employees to commute to the office, wherever possible.

3) Switching off lights and using sunlight during daytime wherever possible. Some corporates may adopt green architecture in building their offices that allow bright sunlight into the workplace.

4) Strict implementation of smoke-free premises.

5) Announcing rewards for employees for green ideas.

6) Conducting tree-planting camps for employees.

7) Educating employees on safe disposal of electronic waste or biomedical waste, etc.

Hope this gives some idea.
