That can't be standardized; it varies from company to company. What are your HR policies and strategies? However, a few things can be common, but again, it depends on the needs and requirements of the company.

Dear JG Dobbs,

I think it is a good idea. I was using an Excel sheet as my database, and it is good for small companies. With Excel, we can generate any type of reports, consolidate all the data using a pivot table, filter to get required data, mail merge, etc. Sometimes, I feel this is better than any HRIS. However, later I realized that HRIS is better because it has only one database, and the same gets updated. In the case of Excel, all files won't be updated in the same way, and there would be a multiplicity of sheets or files which we may use for different purposes. To update all would be difficult work (if there are more than one HR person in the department). But with HRIS, we will have a reliable database from which we can import data into Excel and generate any type of reports at any point in time.

So, even though I love to work in Excel, the scope of its usage is limited as it is difficult to have only one file for all your applications.

I was thinking along the lines of more templates for Excel, Word, PowerPoint, or even Access. For example, some people have designed templates that track personnel, vacation, and sick days of their employees. I also came across a template on this website for an employee attrition report. I believe that having such templates available would be beneficial for individuals starting a project, as it can provide them with ideas on how to begin. I have attached some examples, and perhaps a few could be used to initiate the database.

Unfortunately, with that link, all those templates require at least Microsoft Office 2003 or later. But hey, if you have created any personal ones that you have used for your HR, please share and post them.

Dear Jaya,
You are on the right track. If the company size increases, you can keep your tabular data in an Excel-supported database like MS Access or RDBMS and pull in data from there. Nowadays, Excel is being used as a very handy tool and can be used as a multi-user HRIS application.

Thanks,

Thank you umalme, I am certainly thinking in that level now...to use a system so that we can import data into excel for day to day applications. Take care..

Can you please attach the blank templates (Excel files) that various companies maintain for recruitment purposes? I am currently working on a project to benchmark MIS reports for various IT companies that are used for recruitment.
