Dear readers,

Pilferage is found in some offices, which is a headache for all. The usual items stolen in our offices/factories are: 1. Stationery, 2. Printer cartridges, 3. Mobile Phones, 4. Portable tools such as testers, screwdrivers, etc. Though these items are petty in value, our valuable man-hours are unnecessarily wasted in searching for or replacing them. Readers, please provide us with solutions on how to prevent this menace of pilferage.

Actually, it depends on the company and the status or level of the person. I would say not every office employee is honest. Many people misuse office facilities, but stealing takes it to the next level. Printing personal documents in the office is understood and allowed, but stealing cartridges is a serious issue. Similarly, mobile phones and portable tools are the responsibility of individual employees, and they should be held accountable for them. It's important to educate the staff about these matters and consider installing dummy cameras or having one real camera for every four dummy cameras.

Dear Chandrasekaran,

This is in addition to what Ravi has said. Pilferage of office items is a common problem worldwide. However, it boils down to personal values as well. You need to teach values, both personal and organizational, to your employees. Find out the amount of revenue lost due to pilferage.

Additionally, pilferage also reflects the economic, social, and cultural backgrounds of the employees. A person aspiring to advance in their career will never consider becoming a kleptomaniac. Implement random security checks. If anyone is found carrying office items without authorization, conduct an inquiry and terminate their services. This action will send a clear message to all. Before initiating these random security checks, please issue a circular to all employees.

During my time in HR, my VP (Ops) terminated the services of a young employee for carrying four lead pencils without permission. She was apprehended during a security check by a female guard.
