Dear All,

As I am working in a REAL ESTATE (CONSTRUCTION) company as an HR Executive, I am lacking Industrial Relations (IR) experience. This company does not have workers or laborers, only contractors and consultants. Therefore, I am only gaining experience related to labor cess. I am missing out on experience with the rest of the IR laws. Additionally, I am considering working in a Manufacturing/FMCG company. Is it possible to make this transition? What steps can be taken?

I appreciate your guidance on this matter.

Thank you.

Subject: Industrial Relations (IR)

If you are planning to opt for a career in a manufacturing or FMCG company, start acquiring knowledge on the following:

1) Familiarize yourself with the cornerstone of all labor laws, namely the Industrial Disputes Act. It is essential to have a basic understanding of grievances, disputes, and the mechanisms for resolving such issues, as IR deals with them day in and day out.

2) Read the Trade Unions Act of 1926.

3) Study the Factories Act of 1948.

4) Familiarize yourself with the Industrial Employment (Standing Orders) Act of 1946.

5) If the state in which you are working has enacted any legislation related to the recognition of trade unions (such as the Maharashtra Recognition of Trade Unions Act), make sure to obtain a copy.

6) Obtain a good book on collective bargaining by an Indian author to understand the process in the Indian context.

7) Understand disciplinary procedures and domestic inquiries.

Additionally, you can search the internet for relevant material on these subjects to gain a comprehensive understanding of Industrial Relations.

This knowledge will provide you with a solid foundation in IR.

Dear Saikumar,

Thank you for your response. I have knowledge of IR/Laws as I have an MBA, but due to working with a Realty Co., we are only dealing with contractors. Therefore, I am lacking in IR experience. This is why I am now looking for opportunities in FMCG/Manufacturing companies. Do you have any job openings or solutions in these sectors?

Sangani
