Dear Abhay,

As per my understanding, there is no separate clause regarding Wind Sock in the Factories Act. According to Section 41B (4) of the Factories Act 1948, it is mandatory to prepare an Onsite Emergency plan, which should include details of wind direction/speed indicators. I have detailed specifications on this. You can simply obtain the same from any suppliers by sending a query, and you will receive all the required technical details.

If anyone else can provide additional information on this topic, please post your valuable comments.

Dear Abhay,

Statutes require the use of a windsock. However, it never specifies the detailed requirements.

A windsock is an instrument used to determine the direction and speed of the wind. Commonly referred to as a "windsock," it is mounted to rotate through a horizontal plane to indicate wind direction. Additionally, it can rotate on its own axis to indicate wind force or speed.

Currently, no specific design or color for windsocks is mandated by any country for industrial use. However, for aviation purposes, certain countries have established their specifications. Windsocks used in aviation are typically installed at low heights, such as 10 feet, rendering them unsuitable for industrial applications.

In terms of safety recommendations, alert orange or orange and white color stripes are preferred as they are considered the most visible from a distance. Some individuals use black and yellow striped windsocks, but these are not recommended due to poor visibility.

Standard windsocks typically measure between 18 inches to 2 feet in diameter and 6 to 9 feet in length. There are also solar or AC-powered windsocks available on the market.

In India, there are currently no specific specifications available for windsocks used in industries. As such, you can safely use a windsock measuring 18 to 24 inches in diameter and 6 to 9 feet in length with orange or orange and white stripes.

Dear Ms.Hansa Vyas Canvas, nylon -, and for that matter any material can be used. However it is advised to keep the weight as low as possible. Regards, Kesava Pillai

Dear sir,

If I'm not wrong, canvas is heavy and will not be helpful. If you have any specifications or information on the make of canvas windsock, please let me know. Will nylon not generate any static charge while blowing???

Dear Hansa Vyas,

Canvas is heavy, strong, and durable. You may choose polyester if not nylon if there is no strong wind blowing all the time. In places where the wind is consistently strong throughout the year, only canvas will last for a few months. In such windy locations, when the wind catches the nylon socks, they tear easily, making canvas a better option. There are also different qualities of canvas.

As industrial wind socks are attached using metal fixtures at considerable heights, grounding may be necessary to protect against lightning, which will also mitigate static electricity concerns.

Dear Sir,

Is it mandatory to use a windsock itself? Wind direction and speed indicators are available in the market, which are more durable when compared to a windsock. These indicators can serve the purpose of a windsock itself.

Please share your comments on this.

Dear Dilip,

I am a worker, a layman currently standing far away from your processing area. There is a gas leak, and I can also hear the siren. As per safety instructions, I have to move fast in a specific direction based on the wind's direction. Will your wind direction/speed indicator be of any help to me or not?

In hazardous industries, it is mandatory to have an emergency plan that includes providing wind socks; it is a crucial requirement.
