Hi, this was a trick question. You have been asked by this question to describe your aims/goals and your career objectives so that they can judge your personality and professionalism. Therefore, if you are asked the same in the future, you need to answer by describing who you are presently and what you aspire to become in the future. Start with your career goals.

If they asked you "who are you," you could have asked them "well, what do you want me to be" or "what do you expect from me?" As simple as that... These are questions on which they would judge your personality, communication, ability, and sometimes stress. It can be anything; I mean it depends on the interviewer. He may take it as he needs.

The question was nothing but an alternative of "tell me something about yourself." But for "who are you," you have to talk about something that defines your personality diplomatically, and the answer can be untrue as well :). For such questions, the answer should not be very lengthy but a short and precise answer is appreciated.

Great question! If the sense of a question is not understood, instead of keeping mum in surprise, the situation has to be cleverly warded off to twist the question into an answer shape. You would need to reply humorously in the same fashion the question was asked, like:
"I am not you, but I surely would like to become like you."
Hi all. I had faced one confusing interview question. That is, "Who are you?" Please give me the answer.

It's more or less the same as "Tell me something about yourself," but it needs a more specific answer. You have to start with the stream of profession that you are currently holding, such as "I am an HR professional." Further, it should continue with the base and facts that build up the foundation for the post you have applied for.

Nobody knows you better than yourself, so when you are asked such a question, you are expected to share every possible thing about yourself. However, this is not as easy as it seems because the interviewer is actually trying to gather insight into your weaknesses and strengths. Therefore, you should be careful and diplomatic while answering this type of question.
I hope you understand the importance of handling such inquiries tactfully.

Hi, this is a tricky question rather than confusing; however, it is not as tight and tough to answer. There are more than one angle to answer this. You could try this.
Professionally - you could detail your education and experience
Personally - you could detail your personal background
Spiritually - you could briefly state your spiritual point of view or reply that spiritually, there is a lot more time to find who you are, and at this stage, you want to focus on your professional career.
Before answering, it would be fine to know from the interviewer on which aspect they want to know about you and answer accordingly. Handle with care as this sometimes appears as over smartness...! All the Best!

If the person interviewing you suddenly asks "Who Are U?", it seems like they may have just had a momentary lapse and forgotten who you are. If possible, you can politely remind them about the interview. If not, it could signal that the interview is over, and you can gracefully conclude the interaction by excusing yourself.

In my opinion, you should have started with some positive points about yourself, such as "I am an enthusiastic and goal-oriented human being," and then could have added information about what you are currently doing and your future ambitions.

Re: Confusing Question... My thoughts on your question are as follows:
According to me, the first answer to this question is "I am a human being." Here, the interviewer wishes to know whether you are aware of the "Self Concept." It is very essential to know your own "self"; only then can you understand others.
By self, it means to be "aware" of your Physical Self, Psychological Self, Social Self, Intellectual Self, etc.
The 5 Ws should be known: Who am I, What am I, How, Where, and Why. To elaborate further, it is essential to know and be aware of your attitudes, beliefs, habits, your thoughts, emotions, behavior, your reactions, impulses, etc. It is a whole gamut of "Self-Awareness," which is a very interesting and challenging topic.
I hope this brief information would enable you to "think" further and gain more knowledge about yourself.
Thanks and all the best,

I assume that you have gone for a job interview. Keep it simple and straight. Give your name. I'm sure the interviewer would have more questions to know more about you. I think we (or you, rather) are reading too much into the question. Please let the interviewer enjoy the interview session with simple, straight answers which prompt him to improvise on his questions while he is getting interesting answers from you. A "soul-searching" answer would leave him searching for a lot of detail, and that would weaken your chances of getting selected. Hope it helps! Praveen Kumar Kambhampati

If the person sitting on a chair asked you "Who are you?"... then probably you entered the wrong cabin for the interview! And if it was during the course of the interview, then probably the person's mind went blank with amnesia or temporary loss of memory or permanent memory loss. In whichever case, your interview is over at that point, and you better walk off!

This is a question that may seem trivial, but rather than dismissing it, we should acknowledge and address it. It is possible that the interviewer was not very comfortable with English, leading to a misinterpretation of his viewpoint.

This same question was asked by Plato on the death of Socrates a great Greek philosopher. The answer given by all the people was, I am teacher, I am goldsmith, I am minister, I am money lender etc... Then Plato told that is the reason why Socrates died, if there were human being there Socrates would be still alive. Hence if this question (who are you?) is put before me I will say "I am first Human Being, humble, easily approachable, friendly and sincere person. I am a qualified Company Secretary with 9 years post qualification experience. I am well versed with Corporate Laws, Property Laws and general legal compliances…….”

Dear all,
This is not a confusing question, but a very straightforward one. What you are supposed to do is to identify yourself - mention your full name, age, marital status, give your historical background in terms of your early education attended up to the higher level, past jobs, and any work experience. Ultimately, you are required to summarize your CV or resume.
My friend, when you are given such a general question, it is an opportunity or room for you to market yourself.
Thank you and have a nice day.

That was a trick question to assess your presence of mind and ability to respond. It was simply to determine if you can answer the client's questions. If you cannot describe yourself, how will you handle your clients? You must be prepared to answer all kinds of questions during an interview.

Dear,
I believe that the answer should be like this:
I am someone who believes in honesty, hard work, sincerity, etc. According to me, in this question, you can explain your strengths. It's true that the interviewer checks your presence of mind. They can mold any question into another form; you just need to understand their requirements. Show your presence of mind and demonstrate that you are prepared to provide accurate accounts to your clients and seniors.

Hi,
This question may be faced in an interview, so you should explain yourself and provide information about your good skills.

In this way, you can explain "who I am," which represents you as well-educated, experienced, and having good results in past organizations. This is how you should answer.

This task is very easy. I would start by introducing myself - stating my name, qualifications, skills, and highlighting what I enjoy doing. I always strive to meet the expectations set by my employers and have consistently delivered on my promises. I have the necessary qualifications required for the job. Additionally, I have valuable experience working with competitors in the same industry.
In conclusion, I am confident that I can meet all your requirements with ease if given the opportunity and a two-month adjustment period. If, however, you find my performance unsatisfactory, you have the option to terminate my employment without prior notice.

Hi!
A very tricky and interesting question indeed! The answer would be: I am [Your Name] and possess positive traits such as competence and honesty. I am currently working in [Your Current Profile]. The course of the interview will depend on this first reply, so it should be impressive.
I would also like to ask, as an interviewer, "Who are you and what do you aspire to be?"

Hi all,
Thank you all for the nice suggestions. Here is a different answer to yours. I would say the answer depends on which of the "hats" I am wearing. I am an earthling for an alien; a global citizen, an Indian for a foreigner, some call me a Kannadiaga, some call me a Tamilian, a son to my parents, a brother to my siblings, a father to my kids, a loving husband to my wife, a loyal worker to my bosses, a supportive boss to my subordinates, etc.
So, if you kindly tell me which of the roles you want me to elaborate on, I will gladly do so. Maybe a long, boring answer that would put the interviewer to sleep.
Have a nice day.

Yes, this is the alternative question to "Tell me something about yourself." If they asked it in another way: you mention your name, your designation if any, then say, "Today, I am here as an interviewee to face an interview for an opportunity in your organization." After that, you may talk about your aims, strengths, hobbies, etc.

Hi,
In my view, if someone asks you, "Who are you?" then you should confidently give your introduction and gently ask the interviewer in which area they would like to know more about you so that you can explain in a better way. This is quite a tricky question designed to confuse the interviewee, but it should be handled carefully and confidently.

To me, "who are you" is not at all a confusing question. The answer is as follows:
1. I am a human being.
2. I am a citizen of a country.
3. I have my own religion.
4. I live in a society.
5. The professional identity.
I have just provided the outline. Now, if you explain this answer, you have to do so in the exact order given above. There is no way you can deviate from points 1 to 5. Whatever you think, it must fall under the aforementioned 5 points.
