New Developments in HR Department
Hello seniors,
I am working for an MNC manufacturing organization. Beginning in 2009, due to the recession, there were not many HR activities in our company, and we were focusing on cost-cutting, etc. By the end of the year, I delivered a baby boy and was on maternity leave. I reported back to duty yesterday.
I am requesting seniors to guide/help/advice/update on developments or improvements that I could introduce in the HR department accordingly. I want to do something very interesting for our organization and employees.
Looking forward to your help.
Regards,
Vidya

Hi Vidya,
Congratulations on your motherhood. I suggest that you conduct a few training programs and training games for your employees. This will help create an atmosphere of enthusiasm. Additionally, you can have a weekly session where you update them on the recent HR trends, business case studies, etc.
Let me know if you require my help in organizing these things.

Dear All,
Thank you very much for the wishes and the response. Ours is a manufacturing MNC company that includes departments like finance, marketing, sales, production, quality, HR, maintenance, logistics, R&D, MARCOM, and so on. The Training, Development, and other benefits are in place. Like Madhav Reddy (RedMad) said, I am looking for examples such as updates in recent HR trends, business cases, new motivating schemes/bonuses, target cum appreciation, etc., where I have lost touch on the HR front.
Regards,
Vidya

Hi there,
Your question is an open-ended question. In order to be able to help you, I need to have the following information:
- What is your organization's training and development strategy?
- What is your organization's performance appraisal system?
- Copy of your HR Manual/Policy.
- What are the policies you have in your organization?
These are the areas in which I might be able to provide input. If you provide me with that information, I might be able to help you improve.

Hi Vidya,
There are lots of things to do in HR, but the key aspect is management support. If you have good convincing power, there are plenty of opportunities.
During an economic downturn, HR plays a significant role. You can analyze which areas of the organization are facing issues. Utilizing this data, you can plan training and development programs. Providing motivational training can boost morale.

Dear Vidya,
Since the recession has impacted your organization as well, here are some suggestions:
1. Organize employee engagement activities to boost employee morale.
2. Study the salary trends within your organization compared to the market and make appropriate recommendations (conduct a remuneration survey).
3. Introduce new topics in the training calendar such as Enhancing Personal Effectiveness, Motivating a Team, Leading Teams, Mentorship, etc.
4. Analyze any attrition within your organization and create a presentation on the causes and any new company details.
5. Understand the new tax rules and ESIC rules.

Hi Vidya,
CONGRATS!
My suggestion is first of all never lose self-confidence. Believe one thing that you are not less than anyone, but at the same time, you are not more than anyone. Dare to dream; your dreams will drive you.
Wishing you all the best.

Dear Vidya,
Congratulations on your new born boy! When seeking advice from us, please remember to mention the nature of your concern, the strengths of your workers, and other relevant details so we can provide useful tips.
It is important to understand that cost cutting is often implemented by employers to control costs, which is a crucial factor in determining profit percentage. However, the HR department's responsibility is to implement these measures without negatively impacting production and quality assurance.
We would appreciate more detailed information from you.
With kind regards and thanks,
AMH - GM-HR.

Hi Vidhya,
I think you must go through the Maternity Benefits Act, which may be applicable to shops, commercials, and factories if you are not covered under the ESIC scheme. Some companies may also have group insurance policies for these types of cases.

It's really strange that people are answering with so much less info. What a way to get info... you might not get the right people to talk to unless you have done groundwork and ask for help based on that. A blind "help me" is not the right way.

Mrs. Vidya Joseph,
Congrats for your motherhood.
I guess may be you would have put forth your query little differently.
You had to take a long break due to maternity and obviously you would not have had time to look at what has happened or what is happening in HR Field. You have restarted your career in HR Profession and do not want to be left behind and want to be updated. May be you are feeling little insecure? It’s okey.
I suggest that firstly you update yourself on your immediate environment, i.e. your company and your industry where you are working. Get as much information as possible from internal as well as external sources.
Nothing great or noteworthy has happened in HR Field in immediate past and I feel you have not missed much. Still you can browse and search past threads and posts on citehr to keep you updated.
Thanks & Regards
