Dear all,

Being a soft skills trainer and having traveled to various locations in the country, I have encountered a very common question, mostly asked by freshers and less experienced people:

"What is the difference between job and career?"

The difference between a job and a career is like the difference between a girlfriend and a wife. Let's see:

Girlfriend vs Job:

Everyone wants a very beautiful girlfriend whom one can boast about.

Similarly, everyone wants to join a popular and traditional company about which one can boast.

A girlfriend should be tempting and should provide everything that you want.

A job should be lucrative and should provide everything that you want.

A girlfriend should not be a liability.

A job should not be a liability.

Career vs Wife:

A wife should wholly satisfy you.

A career should wholly satisfy you.

A wife should be with you in bad times.

A career should help you through the tough times.

A wife may not be that beautiful, but the overall package should be satisfactory.

A career might not bring in as much money as others, but it should satisfy you as a whole.

Now, the question is, what about those who want a career just for money?

The answer is that these are the people who see no difference between a girlfriend and a wife, or they want a wife like their girlfriend or vice versa.

Please share your thoughts.

Cheers and Best regards,

Dear all,

Thanks for your responses. Here it is worth mentioning that the same theory would not apply in countries like the US or Australia, due to a different attitude and way of living. The same is true for Indians living their personal lives the American way. Females should not be disheartened as it's not only Girlfriend vs. Career; it is also Boyfriend vs. Career. The same logic applies. I would love to hear objections on this.
