Hello all,

I am a fresher. I had applied at HCL Tech and got selected after completing all my interviews and salary discussions. I received an offer letter with a Date of Joining (DOJ) of 30th Sep 2020. Just one day before my joining, my recruiter called me and informed me that my Background Verification (BGV) is still processing, so my DOJ will be postponed. Subsequently, I received a new letter stating that my DOJ is now 12th Oct 2020. Then, just one day before my revised joining date, I received an email from my recruiter stating that my BGV is still processing, and I will receive a new DOJ.

My recruiter is currently not answering my calls or replying to my emails. I am unsure of why the BGV is taking so much time, as I had submitted my documents on 16th Sep 2020.

What should I do in this situation?

Dear friends,

At times, such delays do happen. Normally, BGV in respect of freshers will not take much time. If it takes such a long time, it means the requirement of the recruiter is being reassessed in tune with the present position. Additionally, owing to the current economic scenario, the company may choose to cancel all fresh appointments. Your best course of action is to wait patiently. However, if you receive a better opportunity in the meantime, you can pursue it after providing the company with proper notification.

Thank you for your suggestion. My question is, I have 3.2 years of experience and I wrote my resignation after receiving an offer letter and turning down another offer, stating that I have a good opportunity now. However, at the last moment, they informed me that my background verification (BGV) is in progress and the Date of Joining (DOJ) is delayed by 15 days. I am not asking for any compensation for this, as it is not good.

The exact reason behind this is that my current company is under scrutiny due to someone committing fraud using the company's name. This does not mean that everyone does the same. I have provided all my documents, from the offer letter to the experience and relieving letters. This is the actual reason. The HR told me that I now have only one job and if I have other offers, not to worry too much.

Regarding the BGV, every company requires it, so what should I do? Should I start giving interviews or wait for them?

Sir Umakanthan53, please suggest me.

I hope that your resignation from your current job has not been actioned yet, and you may still be serving the notice period. It would be advisable to inform the prospective employer of this situation and emphasize that your credentials are clean. Any further delay due to their hesitance, perhaps based on subjective hiring criteria, could negatively impact your career prospects with uncertainty. After considering these points, you may be compelled to reconsider accepting their offer.
