Dear All,

I have been practicing administration for the past 4 years, though my educational background is in public relations. In the meantime, I have been executing a few HR-related duties. Subsequently, I have secured a new job as an HR manager in a newly set up company.

My question is: what should be the very first thing I outline on my first day of work? Your response will be appreciated.

Hi Dear,

First of all, congrats on getting a new job.

The first day at a new job place is very interesting as well as full of curiosity and nervousness. First impression is the last impression.

Moreover, you are in HR, so you will be the center of news to all employees. You are a professional with very good experience, so we don't need to teach you about dressing. I will simply advise you to be smiling, look interested in knowing new persons, and assure every person that you are also a part of their team.

As you are in a new setup, tell them the benefits and objectives of HR. How will you work with them, for them.

Arrange a 1-to-1 session with all employees to know them better. Apart from this, try to understand your job profile from the very first day so that management has a positive impression of you. Also, discuss manpower planning as it will have a professional impact.

Try to check HR-related files and maintain them. Don't overindulge yourself in work or over-introduction. Be formal, look cheerful, and talk to management at the day's end. Don't discuss any serious issues on the very first day.

The first and most important role varies with respect to the organization and the situation. But I feel you can start with the basic requirements. If it's an SME, then please take the time to understand every employee and get to know each other. Build a better rapport to ensure that it will help you move ahead. (The strategy is to go through everyone's file and understand their profile.) Keep a close watch and try to understand them well.

Being in a critical and central role of an organization, it's possible that people may think you are biased toward certain individuals. So, work to remove that mindset. Understand the HR policies that are implemented in your organization and assess their effectiveness. HR is one of the key roles to play in an organization's growth.

After one month, I will be posted to head a new branch in October. However, do you think it will be appropriate to hold a meeting with my staff when I am posted for them to know the reasons why I am there? Additionally, will it be appropriate and professional for me to outline my measures such as not entertaining lateness, absenteeism, fighting, abandoning work, just to mention a few? I will be counting on you as usual.
