Dear colleagues,

Do any of you have any idea how long a person can work beyond normal working hours? Is there a limit on the maximum number of hours someone can work in a month?

Please let me know at your earliest convenience.

General rule of the land is eight hours of work plus a one-hour lunch break with 10 minutes allocated for a tea break in the morning and the afternoon session. It is important not to extend work beyond office hours. Working after office hours is referred to as overtime or OT. Employees are entitled to receive double the regular wages for overtime work.

Thank you,
Ram

Hi Shyamal,

We can make employees generally work for a maximum of 48 extra hours in a month's time. Exemptions are available for specific processes when they involve essential services, continuous processes, critical processes, etc.

Anil :)

Dear Shyamala,

Working hours are 8, no doubt about it. You can engage them for up to 10 hours per day. Overtime should not exceed 50 hours in a quarter. An exemption can be obtained for 72 hours from the Inspector of Factories, stating the reasons.

In the meantime, please note that female employees should not be engaged for work after 7:00 pm.

I hope this is clear now.
