Dear Prawin,

Learning Emotional Intelligence as an academic study or conducting training on this module because "boss/client" tells you to do so is fine, but can anyone give me a case study on the ROI of this training module? I am yet to come across any trainer who could show reduced operational expenditure or an increase in revenue after this training. Not that I am against learning emotional intelligence, but the recession put Emotional Intelligence to the test. When management or the HR Department terminated staff, did EI come in handy for them? I will be thankful to anyone who could reply to these questions.

Dear Prawin,

Your PPT on EI is really educating for me in a concise manner. Since we do not have easy access to such tools to use in training our people, yours has come right out of the blue sky and made the day for us. We are a group established only a year ago and have been struggling to stand on our own feet in the fields of Sales, Marketing & Distribution. Although most of the senior staff are well-experienced within the industry, the new staff are not. And it is very true that "Street Smarts" are very important in building good relationships with customers, especially in the field that we are venturing into. We would be most grateful if you could kindly shed some light on the "L'oreal results" in connection with EI. In fact, all the articles which we have been enjoying reading are really great and useful for us. It's a pity and shame for us that we could not contribute to the community as we are from a country where such things have been kept at bay for so many years. Thank you all.

Dear Divakar,

This is in reference to your posting on "EI" of November 2006, which I came across today while searching for a topic.

Upon reviewing your claims and aggressive marketing, presenting yourself as a seasoned trainer, I am perplexed by your apparent loss of interest in the efficacy of "EI." My suggestion to you is to practice infinite patience, as changing behaviors is not an instantaneous process. Trainers play their part, but achieving desired results takes time. Therefore, patience is essential. If your intentions are good and positive, they will resonate with individuals eventually. I have experienced success in a few cases where participants have stated they have made positive changes. For instance, a couple who were not seeing eye to eye managed to reconcile in one instance!

Regarding your second point, during a recession, survival becomes paramount for many companies. In such extraordinary circumstances, EI may have to be sidelined. This may be more prevalent in MNCs compared to Indian companies, which typically do not resort to sudden employee terminations. The intrinsic incorporation of EI in Indian culture serves as proof of this. It is worth noting that Indian doctors are highly sought after in England and the USA because of their patient-centric approach, contrasting with the profit-driven mindset in these countries.

Let us not hastily conclude that EI is ineffective! There is a French proverb that states, "WITH PATIENCE ANYTHING CAN BE ACHIEVED." Maintain infinite patience, and your sincere efforts will undoubtedly yield results eventually.

Hello, Mr. Divekar,

Like many other write-ups of yours, this one also interests me. The question you have raised is very valid. However, my point of view on this would be that terminations that occur are also under certain circumstances, such as cost-cutting, downsizing, or various other operational reasons. Here, these terminations are supported by details of the employee based on various parameters. These parameters are mapped for all employees, but the decision to terminate falls only on a few individuals. To decide whose employment would be terminated, Emotional Intelligence (EI) plays a vital role as it is a decision-making process. Management directly considers the cost/revenue aspect of the business in comparison to the employee's productivity. I believe that these rational decisions are also part of EI.

I am confident that if we view EI from this perspective, it becomes a trait similar to any other leadership trait and becomes more pronounced and robust as one gains experience.

I am certain that we can find many examples like this around us, and we may even be one of these examples if we reflect on certain stages of our careers.

I look forward to your comments, Mr. Divekar, and I am sure I will learn a lot from your post, as always.
