Hello,

I need help from all to improve my writing skills. I work in an environment where I need to write and do presentations a lot of the time. However, I find it difficult to organize my thoughts quickly, so it takes me a lot of time to put one piece of writing together. Can anybody help me to work on my writing skills? I will very much appreciate it.

Hi,

As I understand from your post, language is not the problem, but organizing your thought process is your issue.

In this context, it is important to understand that some people are naturally gifted with the ability to write and express well, just as some others can articulate and speak well, while others have an extraordinary gift of sketching and painting or are stronger in Maths and Science.

Does this mean that there is no hope for others? It is just that others have to understand their style, adapt new techniques, and work hard. By posting your problem, you have initiated the first step of seeking out new techniques, and I am sure you are prepared to work hard too.

To organize your thoughts, read up on the Tony Buzan Style of Mind Mapping, which is a well-known technique. If possible, attend a workshop on that style. However, I have neither attended such a program nor met anyone who has undergone such a workshop, so you have to check on the effectiveness and suitability of the same for you.

I have developed my style, and the key is to begin with a simple starting point, which could be in the form of a subject line (as you would do in a letter) so that the crux of the writing is clear first. This would give you the fulcrum around which to outline your points. With this fulcrum in place, make a list of collaborating, competing, supporting, and dysfunctional ideas. Each of these could possibly be the sub-fulcrum of each paragraph or set of paragraphs. They can also act as sub-ideas and subtitles. Now add meat to the skeleton using sentences peppered with action words, adjectives, and the right tone.

To have an idea of my writing style, do visit my Inspirational and Motivational Blogs listed below:

- www.actspot.wordpress.com - Daily Blog
- www.poweract.blogspot.com - Weekly Blog

Your comments on the blogs and the writing style will also be much appreciated.

Hope the ideas expressed will give you a good starting point for you to prepare, practice, and perform well.

Regards and Best Wishes

Jacob is right. Mind maps, popularized by Tony Buzan in the 1970s, are a useful tool. If you have not searched the web on how to organize your thoughts, see Google: [http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&q=organizing+thoughts+&aq=f &aqi=g3&aql=&oq=&g s_rfai=&fp=9c494d436b7467d7](http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&q=organizing+thoughts+&aq=f &aqi=g3&aql=&oq=&g s_rfai=&fp=9c494d436b7467d7).

The following site on Google [http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&q=mind+maps+examples&aq=2&a mp;amp;aqi=g10&aql=&oq=mind+maps&a mp;amp;gs_rfai=&fp=9c494d436b7467d7](http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&q=mind+maps+examples&aq=2&a mp;amp;aqi=g10&aql=&oq=mind+maps&a mp;amp;gs_rfai=&fp=9c494d436b7467d7) gives examples of mind maps (some very complicated, which should not deter you from using). I hope these help you.

Have a nice day.

Hi,

To write well, you must read a lot. This can be in the form of newspapers, analytical articles, magazines related to your profession, etc. Before you write anything, try to break down or jot down every issue into the following heads:

1. Description of the Issue - Problem
2. Understanding of the Issue
3. Causes
4. Effects
5. Solutions/Options

If it is a simple problem, then follow this structure: Introduction, Main, Options, Final recommendations.

Search online for regular formats of the reports you are required to write. This will give you an idea of how to structure your reports. Prepare an outline structure or skeleton roughly in pencil or on your laptop. Seek the view of a colleague if needed on the draft. Then finalize your report.

Keep the language simple but correct. High-flown language is not required. As you keep writing more and more, your writing will improve. You can use forums like Cite HR to express your views more often, which will enhance your written skills.

All the best.

Hi,

To improve upon your written communication, I suggest you undergo one of the following options:

1. Technical Writing Training (visit this blog for more info: [Technical Writing as a Career](http://www.techwritingasacareer.blogspot.com)). The advantage of this course is that you can switch your career into tech writing or improve your writing skills. Additionally, you will enhance your knowledge of the tools.

2. Corporate Communication: This option is preferable if you wish to focus solely on improving your writing skills. It is a workshop conducted over a few weeks. The reason for the duration is that you cannot significantly enhance your written skills in just one or two days. The workshop includes numerous assignments to be completed throughout the course.

Please reach out to us for more details about the courses. You can also find the attached file detailing the course.

Hi,

This is a common problem because our mother tongue as well as our education medium affect our views and thoughts. I also face the same problem sometimes, but with practice and consistent effort, we can overcome it.
